1 Samuel 10, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the LORD hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?

With a heart full of reverence, Samuel gently poured oil over his head, sealing it with a tender kiss. He asked, "Isn't it because God has chosen you to lead His people?"

2

When thou art departed from me to day, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel’s sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say unto thee, The asses which thou wentest to seek are found: and, lo, thy father hath left the care of the asses, and sorroweth for you, saying, What shall I do for my son?

Once you leave me today, you'll meet two men near Rachel's grave at the edge of Benjamin in Zelzah. They'll tell you that the donkeys you were looking for have been found. Your father, who was worried about the donkeys, is now deeply concerned about you, wondering, 'What should I do for my son?'

3

Then shalt thou go on forward from thence, and thou shalt come to the plain of Tabor, and there shall meet thee three men going up to God to Bethel, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine:

From where you stand, continue onward until you reach the flatlands of Tabor. There, you'll encounter three men on a spiritual journey to Bethel. One will be carrying three young goats, another will have three loaves of bread, and the last one will be holding a bottle of wine.

4

And they will salute thee, and give thee two loaves of bread; which thou shalt receive of their hands.

They will greet you warmly, offering you two loaves of bread. Gratefully, accept this gift from their hands.

5

After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery, and a tabret, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they shall prophesy:

Once you reach God's hill, where the Philistine soldiers are stationed, you'll encounter a group of prophets descending from the sacred heights. They'll be carrying musical instruments and will be in the midst of prophecy.

6

And the Spirit of the LORD will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.

The Lord's spirit will fill you, inspiring you to share divine insights, transforming you into a new person.

7

And let it be, when these signs are come unto thee, that thou do as occasion serve thee; for God is with thee.

When these signs appear to you, do whatever the moment calls for, for God is by your side.

8

And thou shalt go down before me to Gilgal; and, behold, I will come down unto thee, to offer burnt offerings, and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings: seven days shalt thou tarry, till I come to thee, and shew thee what thou shalt do.

You will journey ahead of me to Gilgal. There, I will join you to present our offerings and sacrifices for peace. Wait patiently for seven days until I arrive and guide you on what to do next.

9

And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day.

As he walked away from Samuel, God transformed his heart. That day, all the prophesied events unfolded.

10

And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.

When they reached the hill, they were greeted by a group of prophets. Suddenly, he was filled with God's Spirit and began to share divine revelations with them.

11

And it came to pass, when all that knew him beforetime saw that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is come unto the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?

When those who knew Saul saw him prophesying with the prophets, they were shocked. They asked each other, "What's happened to Kish's son? Is Saul now a prophet too?"

12

And one of the same place answered and said, But who is their father? Therefore it became a proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets?

A local bystander asked, "But who is their father?" This question gave birth to the saying, "Is Saul too, a prophet?"

13

And when he had made an end of prophesying, he came to the high place.

After he finished sharing his divine visions, he arrived at the sacred site, filled with awe and reverence.

14

And Saul’s uncle said unto him and to his servant, Whither went ye? And he said, To seek the asses: and when we saw that they were no where, we came to Samuel.

Saul's uncle asked him and his servant, "Where have you been?" Saul replied, "We went looking for the donkeys, but when we couldn't find them anywhere, we turned to Samuel for help."

15

And Saul’s uncle said, Tell me, I pray thee, what Samuel said unto you.

Saul's uncle pleaded, "Please, share with me what Samuel told you."

16

And Saul said unto his uncle, He told us plainly that the asses were found. But of the matter of the kingdom, whereof Samuel spake, he told him not.

Saul told his uncle straightforwardly, "He assured us that the donkeys had been found." But he didn't mention anything about Samuel's talk of a kingdom.

17

And Samuel called the people together unto the LORD to Mizpeh;

Samuel passionately gathered everyone, leading them to Mizpeh to seek the Lord's presence.

18

And said unto the children of Israel, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all kingdoms, and of them that oppressed you:

God spoke to the children of Israel, "Remember, it was I, your Lord, who rescued you from Egypt, freeing you from the Egyptians and all others who tormented you."

19

And ye have this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your adversities and your tribulations; and ye have said unto him, Nay, but set a king over us. Now therefore present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes, and by your thousands.

Today, you've turned your back on the God who rescued you from all your troubles. You've told Him, "No, we want a king instead." Now, gather in His presence, tribe by tribe, in your thousands.

20

And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was taken.

When Samuel gathered all of Israel's tribes, it was Benjamin's tribe that was chosen.

21

When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was taken, and Saul the son of Kish was taken: and when they sought him, he could not be found.

When the tribe of Benjamin was summoned, the family of Matri was chosen, and from them, Saul, son of Kish, was selected. But when they looked for him, Saul was nowhere to be found.

22

Therefore they enquired of the LORD further, if the man should yet come thither. And the LORD answered, Behold he hath hid himself among the stuff.

They asked God, "Will he come here?" God replied, "He's hiding among the belongings."

23

And they ran and fetched him thence: and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward.

They quickly brought him forth from his place. As he stood amidst the crowd, his stature towered over everyone else, making him stand out from the rest.

24

And Samuel said to all the people, See ye him whom the LORD hath chosen, that there is none like him among all the people? And all the people shouted, and said, God save the king.

Samuel addressed the crowd, "Behold, the chosen one of the Lord, unique among us all!" The people erupted in cheers, crying out, "May God protect our king!"

25

Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the LORD. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.

Samuel explained to the people how the kingdom would work, wrote it down in a book, and presented it to God. Then he sent everyone home.

26

And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and there went with him a band of men, whose hearts God had touched.

Saul returned to his home in Gibeah, accompanied by a group of men. These were not just any men, but those whose hearts had been deeply moved by God.

27

But the children of Belial said, How shall this man save us? And they despised him, and brought no presents. But he held his peace.

But some worthless troublemakers questioned, "How can this man rescue us?" They scorned him, offering no gifts. Yet, he remained silent, unperturbed.
