2 Samuel 22, verse by verse
Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.
And David spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul:
On the day when God saved David from his enemies and Saul, David expressed his gratitude through a heartfelt song to the Lord.
And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;
He declared, "The LORD is my unshakeable foundation, my protective haven, and my savior."
The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.
My God is my rock, my unwavering trust lies in Him. He is my protector, the beacon of my salvation, my safe haven, and my rescuer, shielding me from harm.
I will call on the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.
I'll reach out to the Lord, deserving of all my praises, and He will protect me from those who wish me harm.
When the waves of death compassed me, the floods of ungodly men made me afraid;
When death's terrifying waves surrounded me, the overwhelming tide of wickedness filled me with fear.
The sorrows of hell compassed me about; the snares of death prevented me;
The agonies of hell surrounded me; death's traps rose up to meet me.
In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried to my God: and he did hear my voice out of his temple, and my cry did enter into his ears.
In my darkest hour, I reached out to God, pouring out my heart. He listened, hearing my desperate plea from His heavenly home. My cries touched His ears.
Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations of heaven moved and shook, because he was wroth.
The earth quivered in fear, the heavens' foundations swayed, all because of His intense anger.
There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, and fire out of his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it.
From his nostrils erupted a cloud of fury, and his mouth spewed forth a consuming fire, igniting everything in its path.
He bowed the heavens also, and came down; and darkness was under his feet.
He bent the skies and came down, with thick darkness beneath his feet.
And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: and he was seen upon the wings of the wind.
He soared on a celestial being, flying high; visible on the gusts of the wind.
And he made darkness pavilions round about him, dark waters, and thick clouds of the skies.
He surrounded himself with a cloak of darkness, deep waters, and heavy, sky-high clouds.
Through the brightness before him were coals of fire kindled.
His radiant presence ignited a blaze of fiery coals.
The LORD thundered from heaven, and the most High uttered his voice.
With a mighty roar, God's voice echoed from the heavens, the Supreme One expressing Himself powerfully.
And he sent out arrows, and scattered them; lightning, and discomfited them.
He unleashed arrows, causing chaos; with lightning, he overwhelmed them.
And the channels of the sea appeared, the foundations of the world were discovered, at the rebuking of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils.
When God expressed His displeasure, the depths of the sea were revealed and the core of the earth was laid bare, all by the sheer force of His divine breath.
He sent from above, he took me; he drew me out of many waters;
From the heavens, He reached down, embracing me. He rescued me from the overwhelming waves of life.
He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them that hated me: for they were too strong for me.
He saved me from my powerful foe and those who despised me, as they were overwhelming for me.
They prevented me in the day of my calamity: but the LORD was my stay.
In my darkest hour, they came out against me. But God, He was my unwavering support.
He brought me forth also into a large place: he delivered me, because he delighted in me.
He guided me into a vast, open space, freeing me because he found joy in me.
The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness: according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.
God blessed me for my good deeds and pure intentions.
For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God.
I've faithfully followed God's path, never straying into wrongdoing.
For all his judgments were before me: and as for his statutes, I did not depart from them.
I always kept God's decisions in my heart and never strayed from His rules.
I was also upright before him, and have kept myself from mine iniquity.
I've always stood true in His presence, steering clear from my own wrongdoings.
Therefore the LORD hath recompensed me according to my righteousness; according to my cleanness in his eye sight.
Thus, the Lord rewarded me for my good deeds and purity, as seen through His eyes.
With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful, and with the upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright.
Lord, to those who are kind you show yourself kind, and to those who are upright you show yourself upright.
With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself unsavoury.
When you're genuine, you'll see God's purity; but if you're deceitful, you'll experience His displeasure.
And the afflicted people thou wilt save: but thine eyes are upon the haughty, that thou mayest bring them down.
You rescue those who are suffering, but you watch the arrogant to humble them.
For thou art my lamp, O LORD: and the LORD will lighten my darkness.
You are my guiding light, Lord, illuminating my darkest moments.
For by thee I have run through a troop: by my God have I leaped over a wall.
With your strength, I've overcome armies; with my faith in God, I've scaled impossible barriers.
As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all them that trust in him.
God's path is flawless, His promises are proven true. He is a shield for all who rely on Him.
For who is God, save the LORD? and who is a rock, save our God?
Who else can be our God, if not the LORD? And who else can be as solid and unchanging as our God?
God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect.
God is the source of my courage and energy; He guides me flawlessly on my path.
He maketh my feet like hinds’ feet: and setteth me upon my high places.
He empowers me with the agility of a deer and positions me on my personal peaks.
He teacheth my hands to war; so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms.
He guides my hands in battle, enabling me to shatter the mightiest weapons with my bare arms.
Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy gentleness hath made me great.
You've gifted me with the protection of your salvation, and your kindness has empowered me.
Thou hast enlarged my steps under me; so that my feet did not slip.
You've broadened my path, preventing me from stumbling.
I have pursued mine enemies, and destroyed them; and turned not again until I had consumed them.
I relentlessly chased my foes, vanquishing them completely, not stopping until they were utterly defeated.
And I have consumed them, and wounded them, that they could not arise: yea, they are fallen under my feet.
I have overwhelmed and hurt them, leaving them unable to rise; indeed, they lay defeated at my feet.
For thou hast girded me with strength to battle: them that rose up against me hast thou subdued under me.
You've empowered me with strength for the fight, making those who oppose me fall beneath my feet.
Thou hast also given me the necks of mine enemies, that I might destroy them that hate me.
You've empowered me to overcome my foes, allowing me to defeat those who despise me.
They looked, but there was none to save; even unto the LORD, but he answered them not.
They searched for a savior, but found none; they cried out to God, but He remained silent.
Then did I beat them as small as the dust of the earth, I did stamp them as the mire of the street, and did spread them abroad.
I crushed them to dust, trampled them like mud on the streets, scattering them in all directions.
Thou also hast delivered me from the strivings of my people, thou hast kept me to be head of the heathen: a people which I knew not shall serve me.
You've saved me from my people's conflicts and made me a leader of nations. People unknown to me will now follow my lead.
Strangers shall submit themselves unto me: as soon as they hear, they shall be obedient unto me.
People unfamiliar to me will willingly yield to my guidance; the moment they hear my voice, they will follow my lead.
Strangers shall fade away, and they shall be afraid out of their close places.
Outsiders will gradually disappear, consumed by fear even in their safe havens.
The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and exalted be the God of the rock of my salvation.
God is alive and thriving; I am grateful for my solid foundation in Him; may the God who is the bedrock of my salvation be highly honored.
It is God that avengeth me, and that bringeth down the people under me.
It is God who avenges me and brings nations down beneath me.
And that bringeth me forth from mine enemies: thou also hast lifted me up on high above them that rose up against me: thou hast delivered me from the violent man.
You've rescued me from those who wished me harm, elevating me above those who rise against me. You've saved me from the wrath of violent individuals.
Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and I will sing praises unto thy name.
With a heart full of gratitude, I'll thank you, LORD, among the nations. I'll joyfully sing your praises.
He is the tower of salvation for his king: and sheweth mercy to his anointed, unto David, and to his seed for evermore.
He is the unshakeable refuge for his chosen leader, extending endless compassion to David and his descendants.
