Ecclesiastes 11, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days.

Share your kindness freely, like tossing bread into a river. After some time, you'll see its impact return to you.

2

Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth.

Share generously with many, for you never know what hardships may come upon the world.

3

If the clouds be full of rain, they empty themselves upon the earth: and if the tree fall toward the south, or toward the north, in the place where the tree falleth, there it shall be.

When the clouds are heavy with rain, they release it onto the earth. Just like a tree, wherever it falls, north or south, that's where it stays.

4

He that observeth the wind shall not sow; and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap.

If you're always waiting for the perfect conditions, you'll never get anything done.

5

As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child: even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all.

Just as you can't grasp the mystery of life forming in a mother's womb or understand the journey of the soul, you also can't comprehend the vast workings of God, the creator of all.

6

In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand: for thou knowest not whether shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good.

Work diligently from dawn till dusk, for you never know which efforts will succeed, perhaps they all might.

7

Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun:

Indeed, the light brings joy, and it's a delightful sight to see the sun.

8

But if a man live many years, and rejoice in them all; yet let him remember the days of darkness; for they shall be many. All that cometh is vanity.

Even if a man lives a long, joyful life, he must not forget the tough times; they will be plentiful. Everything that comes is fleeting.

9

Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.

Celebrate your youth, young man, and let your heart be joyful in these early days. Follow your heart and your dreams, but remember, God will hold you accountable for your actions.

10

Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity.

Let go of your sadness and cast off the pain and trouble from your body. Remember, both childhood and youth are fleeting.
