Ezra 1, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,

In the initial year of Cyrus, the Persian king, God's prophecy through Jeremiah was to be realized. God inspired Cyrus, leading him to announce and document a decree across his entire realm.

2

Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, The LORD God of heaven hath given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he hath charged me to build him an house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah.

Cyrus, the King of Persia, passionately declared, "The Lord, the God of Heaven, has entrusted me with all the kingdoms on Earth. He has personally asked me to build a home for Him in Jerusalem, in the land of Judah."

3

Who is there among you of all his people? his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of the LORD God of Israel, (he is the God,) which is in Jerusalem.

Who among you belongs to His people? May God be with you. Journey to Jerusalem in Judah, and with love and devotion, build a home for the Lord, the God of Israel, who resides there.

4

And whosoever remaineth in any place where he sojourneth, let the men of his place help him with silver, and with gold, and with goods, and with beasts, beside the freewill offering for the house of God that is in Jerusalem.

If you're staying somewhere, let the locals support you with money, goods, and livestock, in addition to voluntary donations for God's house in Jerusalem.

5

Then rose up the chief of the fathers of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests, and the Levites, with all them whose spirit God had raised, to go up to build the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem.

The leaders of Judah and Benjamin, along with the priests and Levites, all inspired by God, stood up. They were determined to journey to Jerusalem and rebuild the Lord's house.

6

And all they that were about them strengthened their hands with vessels of silver, with gold, with goods, and with beasts, and with precious things, beside all that was willingly offered.

Everyone around them generously supported them with silver, gold, goods, animals, and precious items, in addition to voluntary contributions.

7

Also Cyrus the king brought forth the vessels of the house of the LORD, which Nebuchadnezzar had brought forth out of Jerusalem, and had put them in the house of his gods;

King Cyrus, with reverence, returned the sacred items that King Nebuchadnezzar had taken from Jerusalem and disrespectfully placed among his own idols.

8

Even those did Cyrus king of Persia bring forth by the hand of Mithredath the treasurer, and numbered them unto Sheshbazzar, the prince of Judah.

Cyrus, the Persian king, had Mithredath, his treasurer, bring out these sacred items and count them out to Sheshbazzar, the leader of Judah.

9

And this is the number of them: thirty chargers of gold, a thousand chargers of silver, nine and twenty knives,

This is what they had: thirty golden plates, a thousand silver ones, and twenty-nine knives.

10

Thirty basons of gold, silver basons of a second sort four hundred and ten, and other vessels a thousand.

Thirty golden bowls, four hundred and ten secondary silver bowls, and a thousand other assorted vessels.

11

All the vessels of gold and of silver were five thousand and four hundred. All these did Sheshbazzar bring up with them of the captivity that were brought up from Babylon unto Jerusalem.

There were 5,400 gold and silver vessels in all. Sheshbazzar brought them all from Babylon to Jerusalem when the exiles returned.
