Habakkuk 2, verse by verse
Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.
I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved.
I'll stay alert, perched on my lookout point, eager to hear God's message for me, and ready to respond when I'm corrected.
And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.
The Lord responded to me, saying, "Pen down your vision clearly and simply, so that anyone who reads it can easily understand and act upon it."
For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.
The dream may take time, but be patient. In the end, it will reveal the truth and won't be delayed. Trust in its arrival, for it will surely come.
Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.
Look, those with arrogant hearts are not upright, but the righteous will live by their faith.
Yea also, because he transgresseth by wine, he is a proud man, neither keepeth at home, who enlargeth his desire as hell, and is as death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathereth unto him all nations, and heapeth unto him all people:
Indeed, he who sins with wine is arrogant, never content at home. His greed is as vast as the underworld, as deadly as death itself. Never satisfied, he draws people from all nations to himself, hoarding them like treasures.
Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him, and say, Woe to him that increaseth that which is not his! how long? and to him that ladeth himself with thick clay!
Won't everyone rise against him, mocking him with sayings like, "Look at him, hoarding what isn't his! How long can this go on?" And "Look at him, burdening himself with heavy debts!"
Shall they not rise up suddenly that shall bite thee, and awake that shall vex thee, and thou shalt be for booties unto them?
Won't those who harm you suddenly rise against you, and those who trouble you awaken? And won't you become their spoils?
Because thou hast spoiled many nations, all the remnant of the people shall spoil thee; because of men’s blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell therein.
Because you've harmed many nations, the remaining people will harm you in return. This is due to the bloodshed and violence you've caused in the land, city, and among its inhabitants.
Woe to him that coveteth an evil covetousness to his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the power of evil!
Beware, those who greedily seek evil gains for their homes, hoping to elevate themselves, believing it will save them from harm!
Thou hast consulted shame to thy house by cutting off many people, and hast sinned against thy soul.
You've brought disgrace to your home by destroying many peoples, and you've sinned against your own soul.
For the stone shall cry out of the wall, and the beam out of the timber shall answer it.
Even the silent stone in the wall will speak up, and the wooden beam will respond to its call.
Woe to him that buildeth a town with blood, and stablisheth a city by iniquity!
How terrible for the one who builds a city with bloodshed and establishes it with injustice!
Behold, is it not of the LORD of hosts that the people shall labour in the very fire, and the people shall weary themselves for very vanity?
Isn't it true that people exhaust themselves working tirelessly, driven by the Lord of all, only to find their efforts consumed by the flames of futility?
For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.
The world will overflow with the understanding of God's magnificence, just as the sea is filled with water.
Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness!
How terrible for you who give your neighbours drink, pouring it out until they are drunk, just so you can look at their naked bodies!
Thou art filled with shame for glory: drink thou also, and let thy foreskin be uncovered: the cup of the LORD’s right hand shall be turned unto thee, and shameful spewing shall be on thy glory.
You will be filled with shame instead of glory. Now you drink, and be exposed as uncircumcised! The cup of wrath in the Lord's right hand will come around to you, and disgrace will cover your glory.
For the violence of Lebanon shall cover thee, and the spoil of beasts, which made them afraid, because of men’s blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell therein.
The terror you caused to Lebanon will now consume you, and the harm you've done to animals will terrify you. You'll pay for the bloodshed and the violence you've inflicted upon the land, the city, and its inhabitants.
What profiteth the graven image that the maker thereof hath graven it; the molten image, and a teacher of lies, that the maker of his work trusteth therein, to make dumb idols?
What good does a carved idol bring to its creator? Or a forged statue, a teacher of falsehoods? It's foolish to trust in these lifeless objects.
Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it.
Beware the one who seeks wisdom from lifeless wood and silent stone, even if they're adorned with gold and silver. For they hold no life or knowledge within them.
But the LORD is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him.
In His sacred sanctuary, God resides. Let the world hush in reverence to Him.
