Jonah 2, verse by verse
Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.
Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish’s belly,
In the belly of the fish, Jonah cried out to his God with a desperate prayer.
And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.
In my deepest pain, I called out to God, and He heard me. Even from the darkest depths of despair, I cried, and He listened to my voice.
For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.
You threw me into the ocean's heart, surrounded by surging seas. Your waves and currents swept over me, overwhelming me.
Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.
Feeling abandoned, I cried, "I'm lost from your view!" But I promise, I'll seek your sacred sanctuary again.
The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.
The water closed over me, about to take my life. I was engulfed by the deep, with seaweed tangled around my head.
I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God.
I sank to the deepest valleys, feeling the weight of the world trapping me eternally. Yet, you, my God, saved me from this decay and gave me life again.
When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.
In my deepest despair, I thought of God. My plea reached Him in His sacred sanctuary.
They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.
Those who cling to worthless idols abandon their own chance for compassion.
But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.
With a heart full of gratitude, I'll offer my sacrifices to you. I'll fulfill my promises, for I know that true salvation comes only from you, Lord.
And the LORD spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.
With a divine command, the Lord spoke to the fish, and with a surge of relief, Jonah was released onto the dry land.
