Luke 22, verse by verse
Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.
Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover.
The time was approaching for the sacred festival of Passover, a time without yeast in bread.
And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people.
The high priests and scholars plotted to end his life, their fear of the public's reaction holding them back.
Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve.
Satan took control of Judas, known as Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples.
And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them.
He left to discuss with the high priests and officers, plotting how he could hand him over to them.
And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money.
They rejoiced, happily promising to reward him with wealth.
And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude.
He vowed, eagerly seeking a chance to betray him when they were away from the crowd.
Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed.
The day arrived for the Feast of Unleavened Bread, a time when the Passover lamb was to be sacrificed.
And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat.
He instructed Peter and John with a sense of urgency, "Go, ready our Passover meal, so we may share it together."
And they said unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare?
They asked him, "Where should we get everything ready?"
And he said unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in.
He told them, "Once you're in the city, look for a man carrying a water jug. Follow him into his house."
And ye shall say unto the goodman of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?
You'll ask the homeowner, "The Teacher wants to know, where's the room where He can share the Passover meal with His followers?"
And he shall shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready.
He will guide you to a spacious, well-prepared room upstairs. Get it ready.
And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.
They followed his instructions and found everything as he had promised. Filled with awe and anticipation, they prepared for the Passover.
And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him.
When the time arrived, he settled down, his twelve apostles joining him, their hearts filled with anticipation.
And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer:
He told them, "I deeply longed to share this last Passover meal with you before my trials begin."
For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.
I promise you, I won't taste it again until its purpose is realized in God's realm.
And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves:
He gratefully held the cup high, sharing it with a heartfelt thanks. He gently urged, "Share this among yourselves."
For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come.
I promise you, I won't taste wine again until God's kingdom is here.
And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.
He lovingly held the bread, expressed his gratitude, broke it and shared it among them. He said, "This is my body, given for you. Do this to remember me."
Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
After dinner, He held up the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, my blood poured out for you."
But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table.
Yet, the one who will betray me sits at this very table, his hand reaching out alongside mine.
And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed!
Indeed, the Son of man must walk his destined path. But how terrible it will be for the man who betrays him!
And they began to enquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing.
They started to question each other, wondering who among them would be the one to do this.
And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest.
They also found themselves arguing about who among them was considered the greatest.
And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors.
He told them, "The rulers of other nations dominate their people, and those in power are considered heroes."
But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.
Don't let it be this way among you. Instead, the one who is most important should act like the youngest, and the leader should act like a servant.
For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.
Who is more important, the one eating the meal or the one serving it? Isn't it the one eating? But I am here among you as a servant.
Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations.
You are those who have stood by me during my trials.
And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me;
I'm giving you a realm of your own, just as my Father has given one to me.
That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
You're invited to feast at my table in my realm, and to sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:
With a heavy heart, the Lord warned, "Simon, Simon, be aware, Satan yearns to claim you, to test you as one would separate wheat from chaff."
But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.
I've pleaded for you, that your belief won't fail. Once you've turned back, inspire your brothers with your strength.
And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.
With deep conviction, he declared to the Lord, "I am prepared to follow you, even if it leads to prison or death."
And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.
He said, "Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny knowing me three times."
And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.
He asked them, "Remember when I sent you out with no money, bag, or shoes? Did you lack anything?" They replied, "Not at all."
Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.
He then told them, "If you have money, keep it close. If you don't have a weapon, sell your clothes if you must, and buy one."
For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.
I assure you, this scripture must still come true in me: 'He was counted among the wrongdoers.' What's written about me is reaching its end.
And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.
They presented two swords to the Lord, their voices trembling. He responded gently, "That's enough."
And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him.
He emerged, as was his routine, heading towards the Mount of Olives. His disciples, loyal as ever, trailed behind him.
And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.
When he reached the spot, he urged them, "Please, avoid falling into temptation by praying."
And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,
He moved away from them, just as far as a stone could be thrown, and knelt down in solitude. With a heavy heart, he began to pray.
Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.
Father, if you are willing, take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet not my will, but yours be done.
And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.
An angel from heaven appeared, offering him strength and comfort.
And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
Overwhelmed with intense distress, he prayed even more passionately. His sweat poured out like heavy drops of blood, soaking the ground beneath him.
And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow,
After pouring his heart out in prayer, he returned to his disciples only to find them succumbing to their grief, lost in slumber.
And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.
"Why are you sleeping? Wake up and pray, so you won't fall into temptation."
And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him.
As he was still speaking, suddenly a crowd appeared. Leading them was Judas, one of his closest friends. He approached Jesus, intending to betray him with a kiss.
But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?
With a heavy heart, Jesus asked Judas, "Are you really betraying me, your friend, with a kiss?"
When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword?
Seeing the impending danger, those around him anxiously asked, "Lord, should we fight with our swords?"
And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.
In a surge of anger, one among them struck the high priest's servant, severely slicing off his right ear.
And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him.
With a compassionate response, Jesus said, "No more of this!" Then, gently touching the man's ear, he miraculously healed him.
Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves?
Jesus, with a heavy heart, turned to the religious leaders and temple guards who had approached him and asked, "Did you really have to approach me as if I were a common criminal, armed with swords and clubs?"
When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.
Every day, I was with you in the temple, yet you never raised a hand against me. But now, it's your time, under the influence of darkness.
Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest’s house. And Peter followed afar off.
They seized him, guiding him into the grand house of the high priest. Peter, filled with fear and curiosity, trailed behind at a distance.
And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them.
As they sparked a warm fire in the heart of the room, gathering around it, Peter joined them, sitting in their midst.
But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him.
A particular young girl spotted him sitting by the fire. She studied him intently and declared, "This man was indeed with him."
And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not.
With a pang of guilt, he rejected him, telling her, "Lady, I don't recognize him."
And after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not.
Shortly after, someone else recognized him, exclaiming, "You're one of them!" But Peter denied it, saying, "No, I'm not, my friend."
And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilaean.
An hour later, someone else insisted, "Surely, this man was with him. He must be, because he's from Galilee."
And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew.
Peter responded, "I swear, I don't understand your words." Just as he finished speaking, the rooster crowed.
And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.
The Lord glanced at Peter, their eyes meeting. Suddenly, Peter was flooded with the memory of the Lord's prophecy - that he would deny Him three times before the rooster's call.
And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.
Overwhelmed with regret, Peter stepped outside, his tears flowing freely.
And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him.
The men who captured Jesus cruelly ridiculed and physically abused him.
And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee?
They blindfolded him, cruelly hit his face, and taunted him, "Prophesy! Who hit you?"
And many other things blasphemously spake they against him.
They spoke many hurtful and disrespectful words against him.
And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying,
As dawn broke, the community elders, high priests, and scholars gathered. They brought him before their council, accusing him,
Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe:
Are you the Messiah? Reveal it to us. He replied, Even if I confirm it, you won't trust me.
And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go.
If I question you, you won't respond or set me free.
Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.
From now on, the Son of man will be seated at the right side of God's mighty power.
Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am.
Everyone asked, "Are you really God's Son?" He replied, "You're the ones saying I am."
And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth.
They questioned, "Why seek more proof? We've heard the truth straight from his lips."
