Nehemiah 7, verse by verse
Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.
Now it came to pass, when the wall was built, and I had set up the doors, and the porters and the singers and the Levites were appointed,
When the wall was finally complete, and I'd installed the doors, and assigned roles to the gatekeepers, singers, and Levites, a sense of accomplishment and peace washed over me.
That I gave my brother Hanani, and Hananiah the ruler of the palace, charge over Jerusalem: for he was a faithful man, and feared God above many.
I entrusted my brother Hanani and Hananiah, the palace chief, with the responsibility of Jerusalem. They were chosen because Hananiah was deeply loyal and his reverence for God was greater than most.
And I said unto them, Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun be hot; and while they stand by, let them shut the doors, and bar them: and appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, every one in his watch, and every one to be over against his house.
I told them, "Don't open Jerusalem's gates until the sun is high and hot. As they wait, let them close and secure the doors. Assign each Jerusalem resident a shift to guard, each one protecting their own home."
Now the city was large and great: but the people were few therein, and the houses were not builded.
The city was vast and magnificent, yet it felt empty. Few people lived there, and many homes remained unfinished.
And my God put into mine heart to gather together the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, that they might be reckoned by genealogy. And I found a register of the genealogy of them which came up at the first, and found written therein,
God inspired me to gather the nobles, leaders, and people, to register them by their family lines. I found the family record of those who had come back first, and this is what was written in it:
These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city;
These are the people of the province who came back from exile, from those King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon had carried away. They returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to their own hometown, filled with hope and resilience.

These sought their register among those that were reckoned by genealogy, but it was not found: therefore were they, as polluted, put from the priesthood.
They searched for their ancestral records among those documented, but found nothing. Thus, they were considered tainted and were excluded from serving as priests.
And the Tirshatha said unto them, that they should not eat of the most holy things, till there stood up a priest with Urim and Thummim.
The governor urged them not to eat the most sacred food until a priest was present who could consult God with the Urim and Thummim.
The whole congregation together was forty and two thousand three hundred and threescore,
