Song of Solomon 8, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

O that thou wert as my brother, that sucked the breasts of my mother! when I should find thee without, I would kiss thee; yea, I should not be despised.

I wish you were like a brother to me, nurtured by my mother's love. If I found you outside, I'd greet you with a kiss and no one would scorn me for it.

2

I would lead thee, and bring thee into my mother’s house, who would instruct me: I would cause thee to drink of spiced wine of the juice of my pomegranate.

I'd guide you to my mother's home, where she'd teach me. I'd offer you a taste of my pomegranate's spiced wine.

3

His left hand should be under my head, and his right hand should embrace me.

He cradles my head gently with his left hand, while his right arm wraps around me in a warm embrace.

4

I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem, that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, until he please.

I urge you, dear women of Jerusalem, don't disturb or awaken my love until he's ready.

5

Who is this that cometh up from the wilderness, leaning upon her beloved? I raised thee up under the apple tree: there thy mother brought thee forth: there she brought thee forth that bare thee.

Who is this emerging from the desolation, leaning on her loved one? I awakened you under the apple tree, where your mother gave birth to you, where she who bore you brought you into the world.

6

Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame.

Place me in your heart, hold me close to you. Love is as powerful as death, jealousy as harsh as the grave. Its sparks are fiery, burning with intense passion.

7

Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned.

Love is so powerful that no amount of water can extinguish it, nor can any flood submerge it. If someone tried to buy love with all their wealth, it would be utterly rejected.

8

We have a little sister, and she hath no breasts: what shall we do for our sister in the day when she shall be spoken for?

We have a younger sister, still a child, not yet a woman. What shall we do for her on the day a man asks for her hand?

9

If she be a wall, we will build upon her a palace of silver: and if she be a door, we will inclose her with boards of cedar.

If she stands strong like a wall, we'll adorn her with a palace of silver, enhancing her strength. If she opens up like a door, we'll protect her with cedar planks, ensuring her safety.

10

I am a wall, and my breasts like towers: then was I in his eyes as one that found favour.

I am a wall, and my breasts are like towers. In his gaze, I found favor and love.

11

Solomon had a vineyard at Baalhamon; he let out the vineyard unto keepers; every one for the fruit thereof was to bring a thousand pieces of silver.

Solomon owned a vineyard in Baalhamon, which he entrusted to caretakers. Each was expected to contribute a thousand silver pieces from its produce.

12

My vineyard, which is mine, is before me: thou, O Solomon, must have a thousand, and those that keep the fruit thereof two hundred.

My cherished vineyard lies before me, Solomon, you should have a thousand and those tending to its fruits, two hundred.

13

Thou that dwellest in the gardens, the companions hearken to thy voice: cause me to hear it.

You who live in the gardens, your friends are eager to hear your voice. Please, let me hear it too.

14

Make haste, my beloved, and be thou like to a roe or to a young hart upon the mountains of spices.

Hurry, my love, move swiftly and gracefully like a young deer on a fragrant mountain.
