Daniel 8, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

In the third year of the reign of king Belshazzar a vision appeared unto me, even unto me Daniel, after that which appeared unto me at the first.

In King Belshazzar's third year, I, Daniel, was graced with a vision, a profound experience that followed my initial revelation.

2

And I saw in a vision; and it came to pass, when I saw, that I was at Shushan in the palace, which is in the province of Elam; and I saw in a vision, and I was by the river of Ulai.

In my vision, I found myself standing in the grand palace of Shushan, nestled in the heart of Elam. I was by the tranquil river of Ulai, a sight that filled me with awe and wonder.

3

Then I lifted up mine eyes, and saw, and, behold, there stood before the river a ram which had two horns: and the two horns were high; but one was higher than the other, and the higher came up last.

I looked up and saw, right there by the river, a ram with two tall horns. One horn was taller than the other, and interestingly, the taller one appeared last.

4

I saw the ram pushing westward, and northward, and southward; so that no beasts might stand before him, neither was there any that could deliver out of his hand; but he did according to his will, and became great.

I witnessed the powerful ram charging towards the west, north, and south, unstoppable in its path. No creature could withstand its might, nor escape its grasp. It acted on its own terms, growing in strength and greatness.

5

And as I was considering, behold, an he goat came from the west on the face of the whole earth, and touched not the ground: and the goat had a notable horn between his eyes.

As I pondered, I saw a majestic goat emerge from the west, covering the entire earth without its hooves touching the ground. It had a prominent horn between its eyes.

6

And he came to the ram that had two horns, which I had seen standing before the river, and ran unto him in the fury of his power.

He approached the two-horned ram I'd seen by the river, charging at it with all his fiery might.

7

And I saw him come close unto the ram, and he was moved with choler against him, and smote the ram, and brake his two horns: and there was no power in the ram to stand before him, but he cast him down to the ground, and stamped upon him: and there was none that could deliver the ram out of his hand.

I watched as he approached the ram, filled with rage. He struck the ram, breaking its two horns. The ram was powerless against him, knocked to the ground and trampled. No one could rescue the ram from his grasp.

8

Therefore the he goat waxed very great: and when he was strong, the great horn was broken; and for it came up four notable ones toward the four winds of heaven.

Thus, the goat grew immensely powerful. But at the peak of his strength, his mighty horn shattered. In its place, four significant horns emerged, each reaching out to the four corners of the heavens.

9

And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed exceeding great, toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the pleasant land.

From one of them emerged a small power that grew incredibly strong, spreading its influence to the south, the east, and the beautiful homeland.

10

And it waxed great, even to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and of the stars to the ground, and stamped upon them.

It grew immensely powerful, reaching even the celestial beings. It brought down some of these heavenly entities and stars, crushing them underfoot.

11

Yea, he magnified himself even to the prince of the host, and by him the daily sacrifice was taken away, and the place of the sanctuary was cast down.

Indeed, he arrogantly elevated himself to the level of the leader of the host. Through him, the daily offering was halted, and the sacred sanctuary was tragically destroyed.

12

And an host was given him against the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression, and it cast down the truth to the ground; and it practised, and prospered.

A force was granted to him due to sin, opposing the daily offering. It threw truth to the ground, thriving and succeeding in its deceit.

13

Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake, How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot?

One saint asked another, "How long will the vision last about the daily sacrifice and the desolation's sin, which allows the sanctuary and its people to be trampled?"

14

And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.

He told me, "After 2,300 days, the sacred place will be purified."

15

And it came to pass, when I, even I Daniel, had seen the vision, and sought for the meaning, then, behold, there stood before me as the appearance of a man.

When I, Daniel, had a vision and sought its meaning, suddenly, a figure resembling a man appeared before me.

16

And I heard a man’s voice between the banks of Ulai, which called, and said, Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision.

I heard a voice, echoing from the edges of Ulai, pleading, "Gabriel, help this man grasp the vision."

17

So he came near where I stood: and when he came, I was afraid, and fell upon my face: but he said unto me, Understand, O son of man: for at the time of the end shall be the vision.

As he approached me, fear gripped my heart and I fell to my knees. Yet, he reassured me, saying, "Grasp this, dear human: the vision will come at the end of time."

18

Now as he was speaking with me, I was in a deep sleep on my face toward the ground: but he touched me, and set me upright.

As he spoke to me, I was lost in a profound slumber, my face pressed against the earth. But then, he gently touched me, pulling me back to stand tall.

19

And he said, Behold, I will make thee know what shall be in the last end of the indignation: for at the time appointed the end shall be.

He promised, "I will reveal to you the final outcome of this anger. When the time is right, everything will come to an end."

20

The ram which thou sawest having two horns are the kings of Media and Persia.

The powerful ram you saw, with its two horns, symbolizes the rulers of Media and Persia.

21

And the rough goat is the king of Grecia: and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king.

The rugged goat symbolizes the Greek king, and the prominent horn between its eyes represents the first ruler.

22

Now that being broken, whereas four stood up for it, four kingdoms shall stand up out of the nation, but not in his power.

In the wake of its collapse, four rose in its place. Four kingdoms will emerge from the nation, yet they won't possess its power.

23

And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up.

In the final days of their reign, when wrongdoers have reached their peak, a harsh and cunning king will rise.

24

And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people.

His strength will be immense, yet not from his own might. He will cause great destruction, thrive, and persist. He will bring down the powerful and the sacred.

25

And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.

Through his cunning, he'll make deceit thrive; he'll be arrogant and harm many under the guise of peace. He'll dare to oppose the ultimate Leader, but he'll be shattered, not by human hands.

26

And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it shall be for many days.

The prophecy of the dawn and dusk is indeed real. So, keep this vision close to your heart, for it will take time to unfold.

27

And I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king’s business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it.

Overwhelmed, I, Daniel, collapsed and fell ill for a few days. But then, I gathered my strength, stood up, and returned to the king's duties. The vision left me in awe, but no one else could comprehend it.
