In these passages, hope sits alongside waiting, questions, and difficulty. Read each selection in its chapter rather than treating it as a promise that every situation will quickly improve. These prompts are invitations to reflection.

About these reading guides

Hope can make room for honest questions

Psalm 42 moves between longing, memory, and a repeated question to the soul. Verse 11 does not erase the sadness around it; the speaker addresses that sadness while turning toward God.

Read the whole psalm and notice its changes of voice. You can hold a question and an expression of trust in the same reading.

What does the speaker name honestly before expressing hope?

Hope and patience belong in the same sentence

Romans 8 places hope within a wider discussion of suffering, waiting, and things not yet seen. Verses 24–25 describe waiting patiently for what is still ahead.

Try reading verses 18–30 together. Consider what the surrounding passage adds to the word “hope” that you might miss if you read only a quotation.

Romans 8:24–25 · KJV

24 For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?

25 But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.

Hope is also expressed as a prayer

Romans 15:13 brings hope, joy, and peace into a prayer for its readers. The surrounding chapter speaks of receiving one another and of the encouragement found in Scripture.

Read the verse as a wish for a community as well as for yourself. Consider a small way you could offer encouragement to someone this week.

Romans 15:13 · KJV

13 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.
