Hosea 9, verse by verse
Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.
Rejoice not, O Israel, for joy, as other people: for thou hast gone a whoring from thy God, thou hast loved a reward upon every cornfloor.
Don't celebrate, Israel, like other nations do. You've been unfaithful to your God like a prostitute, loving a prostitute's pay on every threshing floor.
The floor and the winepress shall not feed them, and the new wine shall fail in her.
The land will no longer nourish them, and the fresh wine will disappoint.
They shall not dwell in the LORD’s land; but Ephraim shall return to Egypt, and they shall eat unclean things in Assyria.
They won't be allowed to stay in God's territory. Instead, Ephraim will be sent back to Egypt, and they'll be forced to consume impure food in Assyria.
They shall not offer wine offerings to the LORD, neither shall they be pleasing unto him: their sacrifices shall be unto them as the bread of mourners; all that eat thereof shall be polluted: for their bread for their soul shall not come into the house of the LORD.
They will no longer pour out wine offerings to God, and their sacrifices won't please Him. Their sacrifices will be like the bread of mourners: anyone who eats it will be tainted. Their bread will only feed themselves; it won't come into God's house.
What will ye do in the solemn day, and in the day of the feast of the LORD?
How will you act on sacred days, and during God's festive celebrations?
For, lo, they are gone because of destruction: Egypt shall gather them up, Memphis shall bury them: the pleasant places for their silver, nettles shall possess them: thorns shall be in their tabernacles.
Indeed, they have vanished due to devastation. Egypt will collect their remains, Memphis will be their final resting place. Their once cherished silver lands will be overrun by nettles. Thorns will invade their homes.
The days of visitation are come, the days of recompence are come; Israel shall know it: the prophet is a fool, the spiritual man is mad, for the multitude of thine iniquity, and the great hatred.
The time of reckoning has arrived, the time for payback is here; Israel will realize this. The prophet is misguided, the spiritual man has lost his way, due to the overwhelming sins and intense hatred.
The watchman of Ephraim was with my God: but the prophet is a snare of a fowler in all his ways, and hatred in the house of his God.
The guardian of Ephraim stood with my God, yet the prophet, in all he does, is like a hunter's trap, spreading discord in God's household.
They have deeply corrupted themselves, as in the days of Gibeah: therefore he will remember their iniquity, he will visit their sins.
They've lost themselves in deep corruption, just like in Gibeah's time. So He will remember their wrongdoings and punish their sins.
I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness; I saw your fathers as the firstripe in the fig tree at her first time: but they went to Baalpeor, and separated themselves unto that shame; and their abominations were according as they loved.
I discovered Israel, precious and rare like grapes in a barren desert. I saw your ancestors, ripe and ready like the first figs of the season. But they strayed to Baalpeor, giving themselves to that shameful idol, and became as detestable as the thing they loved.
As for Ephraim, their glory shall fly away like a bird, from the birth, and from the womb, and from the conception.
Ephraim's glory will vanish swiftly, like a bird in flight: no more births, no more pregnancies, not even conception.
Though they bring up their children, yet will I bereave them, that there shall not be a man left: yea, woe also to them when I depart from them!
Even if they raise their kids, I will still take them away, leaving no one behind. Yes, woe to them when I turn away from them!
Ephraim, as I saw Tyrus, is planted in a pleasant place: but Ephraim shall bring forth his children to the murderer.
Ephraim, like the beautiful city of Tyrus, is planted in a delightful place. Yet Ephraim will bring out his children to be slaughtered.
Give them, O LORD: what wilt thou give? give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts.
Lord, what will you bestow upon them? Grant them barren wombs and unfruitful breasts.
All their wickedness is in Gilgal: for there I hated them: for the wickedness of their doings I will drive them out of mine house, I will love them no more: all their princes are revolters.
Gilgal is the heart of their evil; it's where my disdain for them began. Their wicked actions have forced me to expel them from my home. My love for them has ceased; their leaders are all rebels.
Ephraim is smitten, their root is dried up, they shall bear no fruit: yea, though they bring forth, yet will I slay even the beloved fruit of their womb.
Ephraim is struck down, their root has withered, they won't bear any fruit. Even if they do bear children, I will slay their cherished offspring.
My God will cast them away, because they did not hearken unto him: and they shall be wanderers among the nations.
God will turn away from those who ignore His words, leaving them lost and alone among the world's people.
