Isaiah 42, verse by verse
Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.
Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.
See my chosen servant, whom I deeply support and love. I've gifted him with my spirit. He will bring fairness and justice to all people.
He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street.
He will not shout, raise a fuss, or let his voice echo in the streets.
A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth.
He won't break what's already damaged, nor extinguish the faintest spark. Instead, he'll guide us towards truth with fairness.
He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law.
He will not falter or lose heart until he establishes justice on earth; and the islands will eagerly anticipate his rule.
Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein:
God, the Creator, who sculpted the heavens and laid out the earth, who breathes life into all people and ignites the spirit within those who tread upon it, says this:
I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles;
I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness. I will hold your hand and protect you, and I will make you a covenant for the people and a light for all nations.
To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.
To give sight to those who cannot see, to free those held captive, and to lead those in darkness into the light.
I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.
I am God, that's who I am. I won't share my honor with anyone else, nor my praise with idols.
Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them.
Look, what was predicted has happened, and I'm revealing new things to you. I'll let you know about them even before they occur.
Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth, ye that go down to the sea, and all that is therein; the isles, and the inhabitants thereof.
Pour your heart out in a fresh melody to the Lord, let the whole world, from its farthest corners, join in. All you who sail the seas, and everything in it, let the islands and their people raise their voices in praise.
Let the wilderness and the cities thereof lift up their voice, the villages that Kedar doth inhabit: let the inhabitants of the rock sing, let them shout from the top of the mountains.
May the untouched wilds and their bustling cities raise their voices in joy, and the humble homes of Kedar join in. May those living among the rocks sing out, their voices echoing from the mountain peaks.
Let them give glory unto the LORD, and declare his praise in the islands.
Let everyone honor the Lord and sing His praises, even in the most remote islands.
The LORD shall go forth as a mighty man, he shall stir up jealousy like a man of war: he shall cry, yea, roar; he shall prevail against his enemies.
The Lord will rise, strong and fierce, stirring up His zeal like a warrior. He will shout, even roar, triumphing over his foes.
I have long time holden my peace; I have been still, and refrained myself: now will I cry like a travailing woman; I will destroy and devour at once.
For a long time, I've kept quiet, holding back my feelings. But now, I can't contain it anymore. Like a woman in labor, I'll let out my cries. I'm ready to unleash destruction and consume everything in an instant.
I will make waste mountains and hills, and dry up all their herbs; and I will make the rivers islands, and I will dry up the pools.
I will lay bare the mountains and hills, leaving their vegetation parched; I will transform rivers into islands, and evaporate all the water bodies.
And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them.
I will guide those who cannot see along unfamiliar paths; I will illuminate their darkness and straighten their twisted paths. I promise to do this for them and never abandon them.
They shall be turned back, they shall be greatly ashamed, that trust in graven images, that say to the molten images, Ye are our gods.
Those who place their faith in idols will be filled with regret and deep embarrassment, realizing their gods are mere sculptures.
Hear, ye deaf; and look, ye blind, that ye may see.
Listen, those who cannot hear, and observe, those who cannot see, so that you may understand.
Who is blind, but my servant? or deaf, as my messenger that I sent? who is blind as he that is perfect, and blind as the LORD’s servant?
Who could be more oblivious than my faithful servant, or unhearing like the messenger I sent? Who could be as unaware as the one who is flawless, or as sightless as the servant of the Lord?
Seeing many things, but thou observest not; opening the ears, but he heareth not.
Despite witnessing much, you fail to truly see; your ears are open, yet you do not truly listen.
The LORD is well pleased for his righteousness’ sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honourable.
God is truly joyful because of His righteousness. He will elevate His laws, making them respected and revered.
But this is a people robbed and spoiled; they are all of them snared in holes, and they are hid in prison houses: they are for a prey, and none delivereth; for a spoil, and none saith, Restore.
These people are victims, stripped of everything. They're trapped, hidden away in prisons. They're hunted, with no one to rescue them; they're plundered, with no one to demand their return.
Who among you will give ear to this? who will hearken and hear for the time to come?
Who will truly listen to this? Who will open their heart and mind for what's to come?
Who gave Jacob for a spoil, and Israel to the robbers? did not the LORD, he against whom we have sinned? for they would not walk in his ways, neither were they obedient unto his law.
Who handed Jacob over to be plundered and Israel to the robbers? Wasn't it God, against whom we have sinned? They refused to follow His path and would not obey His laws.
Therefore he hath poured upon him the fury of his anger, and the strength of battle: and it hath set him on fire round about, yet he knew not; and it burned him, yet he laid it not to heart.
So, he showered him with his fierce anger and the intensity of war, setting him ablaze. Yet, he remained oblivious, and even as he burned, he didn't take it to heart.
