Job 33, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

Wherefore, Job, I pray thee, hear my speeches, and hearken to all my words.

Job, please, I beg you, listen to what I'm saying and pay attention to every word.

2

Behold, now I have opened my mouth, my tongue hath spoken in my mouth.

Look, I've finally found my voice, my words have come alive from within me.

3

My words shall be of the uprightness of my heart: and my lips shall utter knowledge clearly.

The sincerity of my heart will guide my words, and my lips will express wisdom with clarity.

4

The spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.

God's spirit has crafted me, and His divine breath has infused me with life.

5

If thou canst answer me, set thy words in order before me, stand up.

If you can respond, gather your thoughts, stand tall, and speak to me.

6

Behold, I am according to thy wish in God’s stead: I also am formed out of the clay.

Look, just as you wished, I stand in place of God. I, too, am crafted from the earth's clay.

7

Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, neither shall my hand be heavy upon thee.

Don't worry, my presence won't scare you, nor will I burden you with my power.

8

Surely thou hast spoken in mine hearing, and I have heard the voice of thy words, saying,

Without a doubt, you've spoken and I've clearly heard your words.

9

I am clean without transgression, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me.

I am pure, free from sin. I am blameless; there is no wrongdoing within me.

10

Behold, he findeth occasions against me, he counteth me for his enemy,

Look, he constantly finds reasons to blame me, he considers me his foe.

11

He putteth my feet in the stocks, he marketh all my paths.

He confines my steps, watching my every move closely.

12

Behold, in this thou art not just: I will answer thee, that God is greater than man.

Look, you're not being fair here. Let me clarify for you, God is far more powerful than any human.

13

Why dost thou strive against him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters.

Why do you challenge God? He doesn't owe us explanations for his actions.

14

For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not.

God often communicates, not just once but twice, yet we humans fail to notice.

15

In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed;

In the quiet depths of night, when people are lost in deep sleep, dreams and visions come to them as they rest peacefully in their beds.

16

Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction,

He opens people's ears and seals his stern warnings within them.

17

That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man.

So that he may steer humanity away from their own plans, and shield them from their own arrogance.

18

He keepeth back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword.

He shields his spirit from falling into darkness, and his life from being destroyed by violence.

19

He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and the multitude of his bones with strong pain:

God also disciplines a person through pain as he lies on his bed, his every bone wracked with intense pain.

20

So that his life abhorreth bread, and his soul dainty meat.

He has grown so weary of life that even bread, a basic necessity, disgusts him, and his spirit rejects the finest food.

21

His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones that were not seen stick out.

His body has withered to the point of invisibility, and his once hidden bones now protrude prominently.

22

Yea, his soul draweth near unto the grave, and his life to the destroyers.

Indeed, his spirit is on the brink of death, and his life is close to its end.

23

If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to shew unto man his uprightness:

If there's a messenger at his side, a go-between, one in a thousand, to show that person what is right for him:

24

Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom.

Then he is gracious to him and says, "Spare him from going down to the grave; I've found a ransom for him."

25

His flesh shall be fresher than a child’s: he shall return to the days of his youth:

His body will be as vibrant as a newborn's, he will relive the innocence of his youth.

26

He shall pray unto God, and he will be favourable unto him: and he shall see his face with joy: for he will render unto man his righteousness.

He will speak to God, who will kindly listen. He will see God's face and feel joy, for God will reward him with fairness.

27

He looketh upon men, and if any say, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not;

He watches over us all. If anyone admits, "I've done wrong, twisted what's right, and gained nothing,"

28

He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light.

God will rescue him from going down to the grave, and his life will be bathed in light.

29

Lo, all these things worketh God oftentimes with man,

Indeed, God frequently interacts and influences human life in various ways.

30

To bring back his soul from the pit, to be enlightened with the light of the living.

To bring him back from the brink of the grave, so that he may enjoy the light of life.

31

Mark well, O Job, hearken unto me: hold thy peace, and I will speak.

Listen carefully, Job, and be silent. Let me express my thoughts.

32

If thou hast anything to say, answer me: speak, for I desire to justify thee.

If you have something to share, please do. Speak up, for I yearn to understand and support you.

33

If not, hearken unto me: hold thy peace, and I shall teach thee wisdom.

Listen to me, be silent, and I will guide you towards wisdom.
