Job 37, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

At this also my heart trembleth, and is moved out of his place.

This too makes my heart quiver, stirring it from its calm.

2

Hear attentively the noise of his voice, and the sound that goeth out of his mouth.

Listen closely to the powerful echo of His voice, and the words that flow from His lips.

3

He directeth it under the whole heaven, and his lightning unto the ends of the earth.

He guides it across the vast sky, and his lightning reaches every corner of the earth.

4

After it a voice roareth: he thundereth with the voice of his excellency; and he will not stay them when his voice is heard.

When He speaks, it's like a mighty roar; His voice, majestic and powerful, thunders across the heavens. And when He commands, nothing can resist or delay His will.

5

God thundereth marvellously with his voice; great things doeth he, which we cannot comprehend.

God's voice thunders with awe-inspiring power, performing incredible acts beyond our understanding.

6

For he saith to the snow, Be thou on the earth; likewise to the small rain, and to the great rain of his strength.

He tells the snow, "Fall on the earth," just as he commands both the light drizzle and the powerful downpour.

7

He sealeth up the hand of every man; that all men may know his work.

He brings every person's work to a stop, so that everyone may know His work.

8

Then the beasts go into dens, and remain in their places.

Then the animals retreat to their shelters, staying in their safe havens.

9

Out of the south cometh the whirlwind: and cold out of the north.

From the south, a tempest stirs with fury; while the north breathes a chilling frost.

10

By the breath of God frost is given: and the breadth of the waters is straitened.

God's exhale brings the chill of frost, and His power narrows the vast waters.

11

Also by watering he wearieth the thick cloud: he scattereth his bright cloud:

He loads the dense cloud with water until it is heavy, and scatters his bright cloud of lightning.

12

And it is turned round about by his counsels: that they may do whatsoever he commandeth them upon the face of the world in the earth.

Guided by His wisdom, they follow His commands everywhere on earth.

13

He causeth it to come, whether for correction, or for his land, or for mercy.

He brings it forth, be it for discipline, for his earth, or out of compassion.

14

Hearken unto this, O Job: stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God.

Listen closely, Job: Be still, and marvel at the amazing miracles of God.

15

Dost thou know when God disposed them, and caused the light of his cloud to shine?

Do you realize when God arranged everything, making His divine light shine through the clouds?

16

Dost thou know the balancings of the clouds, the wondrous works of him which is perfect in knowledge?

Do you understand how the clouds hang in balance, the amazing creations of the one who knows all?

17

How thy garments are warm, when he quieteth the earth by the south wind?

Can you feel the warmth of your clothes when the southern wind calms the earth?

18

Hast thou with him spread out the sky, which is strong, and as a molten looking glass?

Did you help Him stretch out the sky, strong as a mirror of cast metal?

19

Teach us what we shall say unto him; for we cannot order our speech by reason of darkness.

Guide us in what to say to Him, for we struggle to find the right words in our confusion and despair.

20

Shall it be told him that I speak? if a man speak, surely he shall be swallowed up.

Should I dare to voice my thoughts? If one dares to speak, they risk being consumed.

21

And now men see not the bright light which is in the clouds: but the wind passeth, and cleanseth them.

Now, people often miss the radiant light hidden in the clouds, but the wind comes, sweeping them clean.

22

Fair weather cometh out of the north: with God is terrible majesty.

From the north, beautiful weather emerges: God's awe-inspiring grandeur is unmatched.

23

Touching the Almighty, we cannot find him out: he is excellent in power, and in judgment, and in plenty of justice: he will not afflict.

As for the Almighty, we can't fully grasp Him: He is supreme in power, in justice and in abundant fairness. He does not oppress anyone.

24

Men do therefore fear him: he respecteth not any that are wise of heart.

People are naturally in awe of Him; He doesn't favor those who consider themselves wise.
