Mark 16, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.

After the Sabbath, Mary Magdalene, Mary, James's mother, and Salome, filled with sorrow and reverence, purchased fragrant spices to lovingly anoint him.

2

And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.

As dawn broke on the first day of the week, they approached the tomb with the sunrise painting the sky.

3

And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?

They wondered anxiously, "Who will help us move the stone from the tomb's entrance?"

4

And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great.

When they glanced over, they were stunned to see the massive stone had been moved aside.

5

And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted.

As they stepped into the tomb, their eyes met a young man, dressed in a flowing white robe, seated to the right. Fear gripped their hearts.

6

And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.

He reassured them, "Don't be scared. You're looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He's alive now; he's not here. Look, this is where they placed him."

7

But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you.

Go now, share with his followers, especially Peter, that he is heading to Galilee ahead of you. Just as he promised, you will find him there.

8

And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid.

They hurriedly left the tomb, shaking with fear and awe. They didn't utter a word to anyone, too scared to speak.

9

Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils.

When dawn broke on the first day of the week, Jesus, having risen, first revealed himself to Mary Magdalene, a woman he had freed from the torment of seven demons.

10

And she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept.

She rushed to share the news with his grieving companions, their tears still fresh from mourning.

11

And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not.

Despite hearing that he was alive and she had seen him, they remained skeptical, unable to embrace the joy of belief.

12

After that he appeared in another form unto two of them, as they walked, and went into the country.

Then, in a different guise, he revealed himself to two of them. They were simply strolling, heading towards the countryside.

13

And they went and told it unto the residue: neither believed they them.

They shared the news with the others, but their words fell on skeptical ears.

14

Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.

Later, he revealed himself to the eleven disciples as they were eating. He scolded them for their lack of faith and stubborn hearts, because they didn't believe those who had seen him after his resurrection.

15

And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

He passionately urged them, "Travel the world, share the good news with everyone you meet."

16

He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

Those who trust and are baptized will find salvation; but those who don't believe will face condemnation.

17

And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

Those who truly believe will be marked by these signs: they'll have the power to banish evil in my name, and they'll communicate in ways they never have before.

18

They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

They will bravely handle danger, even venomous snakes; they'll consume harmful substances without harm; they will touch the ill with healing hands, restoring them to health.

19

So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.

After the Lord Jesus had shared his words with them, he was taken up to heaven and took his place at God's right side.

20

And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

They journeyed far and wide, passionately spreading God's word. The Lord, their constant companion, validated their teachings with miraculous signs. So be it.
