Numbers 30, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

And Moses spake unto the heads of the tribes concerning the children of Israel, saying, This is the thing which the LORD hath commanded.

Moses passionately addressed the leaders of the tribes about the children of Israel, saying, "This is what the LORD has instructed us to do."

2

If a man vow a vow unto the LORD, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth.

When a man makes a promise to God, or pledges his soul with a solemn oath, he must not break his word. He must fulfill every promise he has spoken.

3

If a woman also vow a vow unto the LORD, and bind herself by a bond, being in her father’s house in her youth;

If a young woman, still living in her father's home, passionately pledges a promise to the Lord, binding herself with a solemn oath;

4

And her father hear her vow, and her bond wherewith she hath bound her soul, and her father shall hold his peace at her; then all her vows shall stand, and every bond wherewith she hath bound her soul shall stand.

When her father hears her solemn promise, the commitment she's made with all her heart, and he stays silent, not objecting, then all her promises and commitments will be valid.

5

But if her father disallow her in the day that he heareth; not any of her vows, or of her bonds wherewith she hath bound her soul, shall stand: and the LORD shall forgive her, because her father disallowed her.

If her father refuses her promises on the day he learns of them, none of her vows or commitments will hold. God will forgive her, for her father has denied her.

6

And if she had at all an husband, when she vowed, or uttered ought out of her lips, wherewith she bound her soul;

If she had a husband when she made a vow or spoke a promise that bound her soul,

7

And her husband heard it, and held his peace at her in the day that he heard it: then her vows shall stand, and her bonds wherewith she bound her soul shall stand.

When her husband heard her vows, he remained silent that day. So, her promises were upheld, as were the commitments she made for her soul.

8

But if her husband disallowed her on the day that he heard it; then he shall make her vow which she vowed, and that which she uttered with her lips, wherewith she bound her soul, of none effect: and the LORD shall forgive her.

If her husband disagrees with her vow on the day he learns about it, he can nullify it. Her promise and the commitment she made will be void. God will understand and forgive her.

9

But every vow of a widow, and of her that is divorced, wherewith they have bound their souls, shall stand against her.

Every promise made by a widow or a divorced woman, which they've committed their hearts to, stays binding on them.

10

And if she vowed in her husband’s house, or bound her soul by a bond with an oath;

If she made a promise in her husband's home, or tied her spirit with a solemn vow;

11

And her husband heard it, and held his peace at her, and disallowed her not: then all her vows shall stand, and every bond wherewith she bound her soul shall stand.

When her husband heard her vows, he remained silent, not objecting. Thus, all her promises were upheld, and every commitment she made with her soul was honored.

12

But if her husband hath utterly made them void on the day he heard them; then whatsoever proceeded out of her lips concerning her vows, or concerning the bond of her soul, shall not stand: her husband hath made them void; and the LORD shall forgive her.

If her husband completely rejects her vows on the day he hears them, then whatever promises she made, whether about her vows or her soul's commitment, will not hold. Her husband has nullified them, and God will show her mercy.

13

Every vow, and every binding oath to afflict the soul, her husband may establish it, or her husband may make it void.

Any promise or solemn pledge to self-sacrifice, her husband can either uphold it or nullify it.

14

But if her husband altogether hold his peace at her from day to day; then he establisheth all her vows, or all her bonds, which are upon her: he confirmeth them, because he held his peace at her in the day that he heard them.

If her husband remains silent each day, not objecting to her vows or promises, he accepts them all. His silence is his agreement to her commitments made on the day he heard them.

15

But if he shall any ways make them void after that he hath heard them; then he shall bear her iniquity.

But if he cancels her vows some time after he has heard them, he must carry the weight of her wrongdoing.

16

These are the statutes, which the LORD commanded Moses, between a man and his wife, between the father and his daughter, being yet in her youth in her father’s house.

These are the sacred rules, given by God to Moses, guiding the relationships between a husband and wife, and a father and his young daughter still living under his roof.
