Amos 2, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Moab, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime:

The Lord declares, "Despite Moab's repeated wrongdoings, I will not withhold their deserved punishment. Their heinous act of burning the king of Edom's bones into lime has crossed the line."

2

But I will send a fire upon Moab, and it shall devour the palaces of Kirioth: and Moab shall die with tumult, with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet:

I will ignite a fierce blaze in Moab, consuming the grand halls of Kirioth. Moab will meet its end amidst chaos, cries, and the piercing trumpet's call.

3

And I will cut off the judge from the midst thereof, and will slay all the princes thereof with him, saith the LORD.

The Lord declares, "I will cut off Moab's ruler from among them and kill all its leaders alongside him."

4

Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have despised the law of the LORD, and have not kept his commandments, and their lies caused them to err, after the which their fathers have walked:

The Lord declares, "Despite Judah's repeated wrongdoings, I won't withhold their deserved punishment. They've scorned my laws, ignored my commands, and their deceit has led them astray, following the misguided path of their ancestors."

5

But I will send a fire upon Judah, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem.

I will ignite a fierce blaze in Judah, reducing Jerusalem's grand structures to ashes.

6

Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they sold the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of shoes;

The Lord declares, "I cannot ignore Israel's repeated wrongdoings, and I will not hold back their punishment, because they sell the innocent for money and the poor for a pair of sandals."

7

That pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, and turn aside the way of the meek: and a man and his father will go in unto the same maid, to profane my holy name:

They trample the heads of the poor into the dust and push the humble aside, and a man and his father sleep with the same young woman, and so they defile my sacred name.

8

And they lay themselves down upon clothes laid to pledge by every altar, and they drink the wine of the condemned in the house of their god.

They lie down by each altar on garments taken from the poor as security for loans, and they drink the wine of those they have condemned in their god's house.

9

Yet destroyed I the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks; yet I destroyed his fruit from above, and his roots from beneath.

I vanquished the towering Amorite, as tall as cedar trees and as sturdy as oaks. I eradicated his legacy from the top and uprooted his foundation from below.

10

Also I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and led you forty years through the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite.

I lovingly guided you out of Egypt's clutches and for forty long years, we journeyed together in the wilderness. All this, to gift you the land of the Amorites.

11

And I raised up of your sons for prophets, and of your young men for Nazarites. Is it not even thus, O ye children of Israel? saith the LORD.

I chose your sons to be prophets and your young men to be holy, dedicated Nazarites. Isn't this true, my children of Israel? declares the LORD.

12

But ye gave the Nazarites wine to drink; and commanded the prophets, saying, Prophesy not.

You tempted the devoted Nazarites with wine, silencing the prophets, telling them not to share their visions.

13

Behold, I am pressed under you, as a cart is pressed that is full of sheaves.

I feel overwhelmed by you, just like a heavily loaded cart.

14

Therefore the flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall not strengthen his force, neither shall the mighty deliver himself:

Even the fastest runner cannot outrun fate, the strongest cannot rely solely on their strength, and even the mightiest cannot save themselves.

15

Neither shall he stand that handleth the bow; and he that is swift of foot shall not deliver himself: neither shall he that rideth the horse deliver himself.

Even the skilled archer won't hold his ground; the fastest runner can't save himself. Not even the horse rider can escape.

16

And he that is courageous among the mighty shall flee away naked in that day, saith the LORD.

The bravest among the strong will run, stripped of all, on that day, declares the LORD.
