Amos 4, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

Hear this word, ye kine of Bashan, that are in the mountain of Samaria, which oppress the poor, which crush the needy, which say to their masters, Bring, and let us drink.

Listen up, you cows of Bashan on the mountain of Samaria, you women who exploit the poor and crush the needy, and say to your husbands, "Bring us more to drink!"

2

The Lord GOD hath sworn by his holiness, that, lo, the days shall come upon you, that he will take you away with hooks, and your posterity with fishhooks.

God has sworn by His holiness that a time will come when you will be dragged away with hooks, and the last of you with fishhooks.

3

And ye shall go out at the breaches, every cow at that which is before her; and ye shall cast them into the palace, saith the LORD.

You will be led out through the gaps in the broken walls, each one of you straight ahead. Then, you will be thrown into the palace, as the Lord has declared.

4

Come to Bethel, and transgress; at Gilgal multiply transgression; and bring your sacrifices every morning, and your tithes after three years:

Venture to Bethel, let your mistakes flourish; in Gilgal, let your wrongdoings multiply. Offer your sacrifices each dawn, and present your tithes every third year.

5

And offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving with leaven, and proclaim and publish the free offerings: for this liketh you, O ye children of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.

Express your gratitude through offerings, announce and share your gifts freely. This pleases you, children of Israel, says the Lord God.

6

And I also have given you cleanness of teeth in all your cities, and want of bread in all your places: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.

I gave you empty mouths in all your cities and a lack of bread in all your towns, yet you still haven't turned back to me, says the LORD.

7

And also I have withholden the rain from you, when there were yet three months to the harvest: and I caused it to rain upon one city, and caused it not to rain upon another city: one piece was rained upon, and the piece whereupon it rained not withered.

I held back the rain when you were three months away from harvest. I let it pour on one city, but left another dry. The city blessed with rain flourished, while the one deprived of it withered.

8

So two or three cities wandered unto one city, to drink water; but they were not satisfied: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.

Despite their thirst, people from several towns traveled to one city for water, but still, they weren't quenched. Yet, they didn't think to turn back to me, says the Lord.

9

I have smitten you with blasting and mildew: when your gardens and your vineyards and your fig trees and your olive trees increased, the palmerworm devoured them: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.

I struck you with blight and mildew: when your gardens, vineyards, fig and olive trees flourished, the palmerworm devoured them. Despite this, you still haven't turned back to me, says the LORD.

10

I have sent among you the pestilence after the manner of Egypt: your young men have I slain with the sword, and have taken away your horses; and I have made the stink of your camps to come up unto your nostrils: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.

I brought upon you a plague, just like in Egypt, and took the lives of your young men in battle, leaving your horses gone. The stench of your fallen camps filled your noses, yet still, you did not turn back to me, says the Lord.

11

I have overthrown some of you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and ye were as a firebrand plucked out of the burning: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.

I overthrew some of you, as I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you were like a stick snatched from the flames. Yet, you still haven't turned back to me, says the Lord.

12

Therefore thus will I do unto thee, O Israel: and because I will do this unto thee, prepare to meet thy God, O Israel.

So this is what I will do to you, Israel. And because I will do this to you, get ready to face your God, Israel.

13

For, lo, he that formeth the mountains, and createth the wind, and declareth unto man what is his thought, that maketh the morning darkness, and treadeth upon the high places of the earth, The LORD, The God of hosts, is his name.

Indeed, the one who sculpts the mountains, breathes life into the wind, and whispers into man's mind, who paints the dawn with shadows and walks on the earth's highest peaks, is our Lord, the Almighty God.
