Amos 9, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

I saw the LORD standing upon the altar: and he said, Smite the lintel of the door, that the posts may shake: and cut them in the head, all of them; and I will slay the last of them with the sword: he that fleeth of them shall not flee away, and he that escapeth of them shall not be delivered.

I witnessed God, powerful and commanding, standing by the altar. He ordered, "Strike the door's top, let its pillars tremble. Bring them down on everyone's heads, and I will kill the rest of them with the sword. No one will escape, no one will be saved."

2

Though they dig into hell, thence shall mine hand take them; though they climb up to heaven, thence will I bring them down:

Even if they dig down into the world of the dead, my hand will drag them out from there. Even if they climb up to the heavens, I will pull them down from there.

3

And though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out thence; and though they be hid from my sight in the bottom of the sea, thence will I command the serpent, and he shall bite them:

Even if they try to hide on the highest peak or in the deepest sea, I will find them. No matter where they hide, I will command the serpent to strike them.

4

And though they go into captivity before their enemies, thence will I command the sword, and it shall slay them: and I will set mine eyes upon them for evil, and not for good.

Even if they are captured by their foes, I will order the sword to end their lives. My gaze will be upon them, not with kindness, but with wrath.

5

And the Lord GOD of hosts is he that toucheth the land, and it shall melt, and all that dwell therein shall mourn: and it shall rise up wholly like a flood; and shall be drowned, as by the flood of Egypt.

The Almighty Lord, with a mere touch, can dissolve the earth, causing all its inhabitants to grieve. The land will surge like a great wave, submerging everything, just like the historic flood of Egypt.

6

It is he that buildeth his stories in the heaven, and hath founded his troop in the earth; he that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name.

He is the architect of the heavens, the commander of forces on earth. He summons the sea's waters and showers them upon the earth. He is known as the LORD.

7

Are ye not as children of the Ethiopians unto me, O children of Israel? saith the LORD. Have not I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt? and the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir?

Don't you see, my dear children of Israel, that you are no different to me than the children of Ethiopia? Asks the Lord. Haven't I, the Lord, rescued you from Egypt? And didn't I also guide the Philistines from Caphtor and the Syrians from Kir?

8

Behold, the eyes of the Lord GOD are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth; saving that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, saith the LORD.

God's gaze is fixed on this sinful kingdom, and He will wipe it off the face of the earth. Yet, He promises not to completely obliterate the lineage of Jacob, declares the Lord.

9

For, lo, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all nations, like as corn is sifted in a sieve, yet shall not the least grain fall upon the earth.

Indeed, I will give the command, and I will shake the people of Israel among all nations, just as grain is shaken in a sieve. Yet not the smallest grain will fall to the ground.

10

All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword, which say, The evil shall not overtake nor prevent us.

Every sinner among my people will die by the sword, all those who say, "Disaster will never catch up with us or come near us."

11

In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old:

On that day, I will restore David's fallen shelter, mend its broken parts, resurrect its ruins, and rebuild it as it was in the glorious past.

12

That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen, which are called by my name, saith the LORD that doeth this.

So they may claim what's left of Edom, and all the nations who recognize my name, declares the LORD who makes this happen.

13

Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that soweth seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt.

The Lord promises a time is coming when harvest will be so abundant that before one can finish reaping, the sower will begin planting again. The mountains will overflow with sweet wine and the hills will dissolve with abundance.

14

And I will bring again the captivity of my people of Israel, and they shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof; they shall also make gardens, and eat the fruit of them.

I will liberally restore my people of Israel. They will rebuild their ruined cities and live in them again. They will plant vineyards and enjoy their wine; they will cultivate gardens and savor their fruits.

15

And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land which I have given them, saith the LORD thy God.

I will firmly root them in their own land, gifted by me. They will never again be uprooted, promises the Lord your God.
