Read 1 Kings in the King James Version, with a plain-language reading beneath every verse. Here are a few to start with.
From 1 Kings
Now king David was old and stricken in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he gat no heat.
King David, now aged and frail, was wrapped in layers of clothing, yet he couldn't shake off the cold.
And king Solomon, and all the congregation of Israel, that were assembled unto him, were with him before the ark, sacrificing sheep and oxen, that could not be told nor numbered for multitude.
King Solomon and the entire gathering of Israel stood before the sacred ark. Their hearts filled with reverence, they offered countless sheep and oxen, a sacrifice so immense it was beyond measure.
Blessed be the LORD, that hath given rest unto his people Israel, according to all that he promised: there hath not failed one word of all his good promise, which he promised by the hand of Moses his servant.
Praise the Lord, who has given His people, Israel, peace as He promised. Not a single word of His good promise, made through His servant Moses, has been unfulfilled.
And also Maachah his mother, even her he removed from being queen, because she had made an idol in a grove; and Asa destroyed her idol, and burnt it by the brook Kidron.
Asa, deeply hurt and disappointed, stripped his own mother, Maachah, of her queenly title. Her creation of an idol in the sacred grove had forced his hand. With a heavy heart, he demolished her idol and set it ablaze near the Kidron stream.
