Acts 11, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

And the apostles and brethren that were in Judaea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God.

The apostles and their fellow believers in Judaea were filled with joy and surprise upon hearing that even the Gentiles had embraced God's word.

2

And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him,

When Peter arrived in Jerusalem, those who followed the tradition of circumcision confronted him with hostility.

3

Saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them.

You mingled and shared meals with those not bound by our traditions.

4

But Peter rehearsed the matter from the beginning, and expounded it by order unto them, saying,

Peter passionately retold the story from the start, explaining it step by step to them, saying,

5

I was in the city of Joppa praying: and in a trance I saw a vision, A certain vessel descend, as it had been a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners; and it came even to me:

While praying in the city of Joppa, I was swept into a deep trance. I saw a vision - a massive sheet-like vessel, descending from the heavens, held by its four corners. It came down, right to where I was.

6

Upon the which when I had fastened mine eyes, I considered, and saw fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.

When I focused my gaze, I saw all creatures of the earth - animals that walk on four legs, wild beasts, tiny crawling creatures, and birds soaring in the sky.

7

And I heard a voice saying unto me, Arise, Peter; slay and eat.

I felt a voice gently nudging me, "Get up, Peter. Kill and feast."

8

But I said, Not so, Lord: for nothing common or unclean hath at any time entered into my mouth.

No way, Lord, I've never let anything unholy or unclean pass my lips.

9

But the voice answered me again from heaven, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.

From the heavens, the voice spoke to me once more, "Do not call unholy what God has made clean."

10

And this was done three times: and all were drawn up again into heaven.

This happened thrice, each time, everything was gently lifted back to the heavens.

11

And, behold, immediately there were three men already come unto the house where I was, sent from Caesarea unto me.

Suddenly, three men arrived at my house, sent to me all the way from Caesarea.

12

And the Spirit bade me go with them, nothing doubting. Moreover these six brethren accompanied me, and we entered into the man’s house:

The Spirit urged me to accompany them without any hesitation. Along with six others, we stepped into the man's home.

13

And he shewed us how he had seen an angel in his house, which stood and said unto him, Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, whose surname is Peter;

He shared with us his awe-inspiring encounter with an angel in his home. The celestial being, standing tall, instructed him to send men to Joppa to fetch Simon, known also as Peter.

14

Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved.

He will share the words that will bring salvation to you and your entire family.

15

And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.

As I started to share my words, they too were touched by the Divine Spirit, just like we were in the beginning.

16

Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.

Then it hit me, the Lord's promise. He said, "John baptized with water, but you will be immersed in the Holy Spirit."

17

Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?

Since God blessed them just as He blessed us, all who have faith in Jesus Christ, who was I to question God's actions?

18

When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

Upon hearing this, they fell silent, filled with awe. They praised God, realizing, "So, God has given even the Gentiles repentance that leads to life."

19

Now they which were scattered abroad upon the persecution that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, preaching the word to none but unto the Jews only.

Those who were forced to flee due to the persecution following Stephen's incident journeyed to places like Phenice, Cyprus, and Antioch. They shared their faith, but only with their fellow Jews.

20

And some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, which, when they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Grecians, preaching the LORD Jesus.

Some were from Cyprus and Cyrene, who upon arriving in Antioch, passionately shared the message of Lord Jesus with the Greeks.

21

And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believed, and turned unto the Lord.

God's guiding hand was with them, inspiring many to believe and embrace Him.

22

Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas, that he should go as far as Antioch.

News about these events reached the church in Jerusalem. Deeply moved, they sent Barnabas to Antioch.

23

Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord.

When he arrived and witnessed God's grace, he was filled with joy. He passionately urged everyone to wholeheartedly commit to the Lord.

24

For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord.

He was a virtuous man, brimming with divine spirit and faith. His influence led many to embrace the Lord.

25

Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek Saul:

Barnabas, filled with determination, set off for Tarsus, on a mission to find Saul.

26

And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

After finding him, he led him to Antioch. For an entire year, they gathered with the church, teaching many. It was here in Antioch, that the disciples were first known as Christians.

27

And in these days came prophets from Jerusalem unto Antioch.

During those times, prophets journeyed from Jerusalem to Antioch, their hearts filled with divine purpose.

28

And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit that there should be great dearth throughout all the world: which came to pass in the days of Claudius Caesar.

One among them, Agabus, rose, guided by the Spirit. He foretold of a severe famine that would engulf the entire world, a prophecy that came true during the reign of Claudius Caesar.

29

Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea:

Moved by compassion, each disciple, according to their means, decided to send help to their brothers living in Judaea.

30

Which also they did, and sent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.

They did so, and Barnabas and Saul faithfully delivered their gifts to the elders.
