Acts 4, verse by verse
Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.
And as they spake unto the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees, came upon them,
As they shared their message with the crowd, the temple's religious leaders and guards, along with the skeptical Sadducees, suddenly confronted them.
Being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
They were deeply upset that the apostles were teaching the people and proclaiming, through Jesus, the resurrection of the dead.
And they laid hands on them, and put them in hold unto the next day: for it was now eventide.
They seized them, imprisoning them until the next day, as darkness had already fallen.
Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand.
Despite the circumstances, many who heard the message believed it. The crowd of believers grew to nearly five thousand men.
And it came to pass on the morrow, that their rulers, and elders, and scribes,
The next day, their leaders, elders, and scholars gathered.
And Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the kindred of the high priest, were gathered together at Jerusalem.
In Jerusalem, Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and all related to the high priest, came together in a significant gathering.
And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, have ye done this?
Surrounded, they questioned them, "What force or name enabled you to do this?"
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel,
Peter, brimming with divine inspiration, addressed the leaders and wise elders of Israel, saying,
If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole;
If today we're questioned about the kind act we did for the disabled man, and how he was healed;
Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.
Let everyone, especially the people of Israel, understand this: It's through Jesus Christ of Nazareth, the one you crucified but God resurrected, that this man stands healed before you.
This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.
You builders ignored this stone, but now it's the cornerstone, the most important piece.
Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
No other can save us, only one name in the universe has the power to do so. We must trust in it for our salvation.
Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.
Seeing Peter and John's courage, people were amazed. Despite their lack of formal education, it was clear they had been in Jesus' company, and this left a profound impression.
And beholding the man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.
Seeing the healed man standing there, they were left speechless, unable to deny the miracle.
But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves,
After asking them to step out of the meeting, they began to discuss privately.
Saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it.
"What should we do with these men? They've performed a miracle that everyone in Jerusalem has seen. We can't ignore it."
But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name.
To prevent this from spreading among the people, let's sternly warn them not to speak of this matter to anyone.
And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.
They summoned them, sternly ordering them to remain silent and not to teach anything about Jesus.
But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye.
But Peter and John responded, "You decide if it's right in God's eyes to listen to you more than to God."
For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.
We simply must share what we've personally experienced and heard.
So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the people: for all men glorified God for that which was done.
After more threats, they reluctantly released them. They couldn't find a reason to punish them without upsetting the crowd, for everyone was praising God for what had happened.
For the man was above forty years old, on whom this miracle of healing was shewed.
The man, who was over forty, experienced this miraculous healing.
And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them.
After being released, they returned to their group, sharing everything the high priests and elders had told them.
And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is:
Upon hearing this, they united their voices in a heartfelt cry to God, exclaiming, "Lord, you are the Creator of the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything within them."
Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things?
Through the words of your servant David, you asked, "Why do the nations rage, and why do the peoples plot in vain?"
The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ.
Earth's leaders rose, united in defiance against the Lord and His Anointed One, their hearts filled with rebellion and disbelief.
For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together,
Indeed, it's true that your holy son Jesus, whom you anointed, was opposed by Herod, Pontius Pilate, the foreigners, and even the people of Israel. They all united against him.
For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.
To carry out what your heart and wisdom had long ago decided to accomplish.
And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word,
Lord, see how they threaten us. Please, give us, your faithful servants, the courage to fearlessly proclaim your truth.
By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.
Reach out your hand to bring healing, so that miracles and wonders can be performed through the sacred name of your beloved child, Jesus.
And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.
After they prayed, their gathering place trembled. They were all filled with a divine spirit, and they confidently shared God's message.
And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.
The many who believed were united in heart and spirit. None of them claimed their possessions as their own, but shared everything they had.
And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.
The apostles passionately testified about Jesus' resurrection with immense strength. Everyone was touched by a profound sense of divine kindness.
Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold,
No one among them was in need. Those who owned land or houses sold them, bringing the money from their sales.
And laid them down at the apostles’ feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.
They placed their offerings at the apostles' feet, and from there, it was shared out, ensuring everyone's needs were met.
And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being interpreted, The son of consolation,) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus,
Joses, affectionately known by the apostles as Barnabas or "The Son of Comfort," was a Levite from Cyprus.
Having land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
With a generous heart, he sold a field he owned, brought the money, and humbly laid it at the apostles' feet.
