Acts 2, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

When the day of Pentecost finally arrived, they were all united, gathered together in one place.

2

And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

Suddenly, a powerful, roaring wind sound echoed from the heavens, engulfing the entire house where they sat in awe.

3

And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

Suddenly, they saw what seemed like split tongues of fire, gently resting on each one of them.

4

And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Everyone was filled with divine inspiration, and they started speaking in different languages, guided by the Spirit's influence.

5

And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.

In Jerusalem, faithful Jewish men from every corner of the globe had made their home.

6

Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

When word got out, a crowd quickly gathered, amazed and bewildered. They couldn't believe their ears; everyone was hearing the message in their own language.

7

And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?

Everyone was astounded and wondered aloud, "Aren't all these speakers from Galilee?"

8

And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?

How is it that we understand everyone, each in our own native language?

9

Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,

People from Parthia, Media, Elam, Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, and Asia, all united in faith.

10

Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,

From the lands of Phrygia and Pamphylia, from Egypt and Libya's regions near Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and converts to Judaism, we all gather.

11

Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

People from Crete and Arabia, we hear them express in our own languages the awe-inspiring deeds of God.

12

And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?

Everyone was astounded and confused, asking each other, "What does this mean?"

13

Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.

Others scoffed, accusing, "These men are drunk on fresh wine."

14

But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:

Peter, standing strong among his eleven companions, raised his voice. He spoke to the men of Judea and everyone in Jerusalem, "Listen closely, understand and remember my words."

15

For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.

They aren't drunk as you might think, it's only early morning.

16

But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;

This is the fulfillment of what the prophet Joel had foretold.

17

And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:

In the final days, God promises, His Spirit will touch every soul. Your children will speak divine truths, your youth will see heavenly visions, and your elders will dream profound dreams.

18

And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:

In those days, I will pour out my Spirit on my servants and handmaidens, and they will prophesy.

19

And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:

I will reveal awe-inspiring miracles in the sky and signs on the earth below; there will be blood, fire, and billowing smoke.

20

The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and notable day of the Lord come:

Before the grand day of the Lord arrives, the sun will darken and the moon will bleed.

21

And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Anyone who cries out to God will find salvation.

22

Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:

People of Israel, listen to this: God showed His approval of Jesus of Nazareth through the miracles, wonders, and signs He performed through Him among you, as you yourselves know.

23

Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:

God, in His divine wisdom and plan, handed Him over to you. Yet, with cruel intentions, you seized Him, nailed Him to the cross, and took His life.

24

Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.

God has resurrected, freeing Him from the grasp of death, for it was impossible for death to hold Him captive.

25

For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:

David passionately declares, "I constantly envision the Lord before me, He stands at my right side, providing unshakeable strength and stability."

26

Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope:

My heart danced with joy, my tongue sang with happiness, and my body found peace in hope.

27

Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

You won't abandon me to the grave, nor let your cherished one decay.

28

Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.

You've shown me how to truly live; your presence fills me with pure happiness.

29

Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.

Friends, let me openly share with you about our forefather David. He has passed away and is buried, and his tomb remains with us even today.

30

Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;

As a prophet, he deeply understood that God had made a solemn promise to him. God would bring forth Christ from his own lineage, who would then sit on David's own throne.

31

He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.

He foresaw and spoke about Christ's resurrection, affirming that Christ's spirit wasn't abandoned in the underworld, and his body remained unspoiled.

32

This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.

God has raised this Jesus back to life, and we have all seen it with our own eyes.

33

Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.

Exalted to God's right hand, He received the promised Holy Spirit from the Father and poured out what you now see and hear.

34

For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,

David hasn't gone to heaven, but he himself said, "God told my Lord, 'Sit at my right side.'"

35

Until I make thy foes thy footstool.

Until I put your enemies under your feet as your footstool.

36

Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made the same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.

Let it be clear to everyone in Israel, God has made Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.

37

Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

Upon hearing this, they felt a deep sting in their hearts. Turning to Peter and the other apostles, they pleaded, "Brothers, what should we do?"

38

Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Peter urged them, "Change your ways, let each of you be baptized in Jesus Christ's name to cleanse your sins. Then, you'll be blessed with the Holy Spirit's gift."

39

For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the LORD our God shall call.

God's promise is for you, your children, and everyone, near or far, who hears His call.

40

And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.

In his passionate plea, he urged them with heartfelt words, "Save yourselves from this crooked, corrupt generation."

41

Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

Those who joyfully embraced his teachings were baptized. That very day, their community grew by an astounding three thousand souls.

42

And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.

They remained unwavering in their faith, deeply connected with the teachings of the apostles. They shared meals and prayers with a sense of unity and devotion.

43

And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.

Every heart was filled with awe, as the apostles performed incredible miracles and signs.

44

And all that believed were together, and had all things common;

Everyone who believed were united, sharing everything they had with each other.

45

And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.

They selflessly sold their belongings, sharing the proceeds with everyone, according to their needs.

46

And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,

Every day, they gathered together in unity at the temple and shared meals from home to home. They ate joyfully, their hearts filled with pure, simple happiness.

47

Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

Celebrating God, loved by everyone. Every day, God brought more people to the church, guiding them towards salvation.
