Matthew 10, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

When he summoned his twelve disciples, he bestowed upon them the strength to combat evil spirits, to banish them, and to cure every sickness and disease.

2

Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;

Here are the names of the twelve apostles, each with a unique story: First, there's Simon, known as Peter, and his brother Andrew. Then, we have James, Zebedee's son, and his brother John.

3

Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus;

Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the tax collector, James, Alphaeus' son, and Lebbaeus, also known as Thaddaeus.

4

Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.

Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus.

5

These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not:

Jesus chose twelve disciples and instructed them, "Don't go among the Gentiles or enter any Samaritan city."

6

But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

Instead, seek out those who are lost and forgotten among the people of Israel.

7

And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.

As you journey, passionately share the message, "The kingdom of heaven is near."

8

Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.

Heal those who are ill, cleanse those with leprosy, raise the dead, drive out demons: since you've been given these gifts without cost, share them generously.

9

Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses,

Don't carry any gold, silver, or coins in your wallets.

10

Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat.

Don't pack for your journey or take extra clothes, shoes, or walking sticks. Trust that your hard work will provide for you.

11

And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, enquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence.

When you arrive in any city or town, find out who there is worthy. Stay with them until you leave.

12

And when ye come into an house, salute it.

When you enter a home, greet it with warmth and respect.

13

And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.

If the home is deserving, bless it with your tranquility. But if it's not, keep your peace to yourself.

14

And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.

If people don't welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and brush off the rejection like dust from your feet.

15

Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

Truly, I tell you, on judgment day, even Sodom and Gomorrah will fare better than that city.

16

Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

I'm sending you out, like innocent lambs among cunning wolves. So, be as clever as snakes yet as gentle as doves.

17

But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues;

Be cautious of people, for they may betray you to authorities and punish you in their places of worship.

18

And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles.

You will stand before leaders and rulers because of me, as a witness to them and to all nations.

19

But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.

When they confront you, don't worry about what to say or how to say it. In that moment, you'll be given the right words.

20

For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.

It's not you who speaks, but your Father's Spirit speaking through you.

21

And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death.

A brother will betray his own brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death.

22

And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.

Everyone might despise you because of your faith in me, but if you stay strong till the end, you'll find salvation.

23

But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.

When you face persecution in one city, escape to another. I assure you, you won't have traveled through all the cities of Israel before the Son of Man arrives.

24

The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord.

A student is not superior to their teacher, just as a worker is not above their boss.

25

It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household?

A student should strive to be like their teacher, and a servant like their master. If people have insulted the head of the family, expect them to insult the family members too.

26

Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.

Don't be afraid: nothing hidden will stay hidden, and nothing secret will stay secret.

27

What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops.

Share openly what I whisper to you in secret, and shout from the rooftops what you hear in whispers.

28

And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Don't be afraid of those who can kill your body but can't touch your soul. Instead, be afraid of the one who can destroy both your body and soul in hell.

29

Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.

Isn't it amazing that two tiny sparrows cost just a penny? Yet, not even one of them can tumble from the sky without your Father's awareness.

30

But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

Every single strand of hair on your head is known and cherished.

31

Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.

Don't be afraid, you are worth more than countless sparrows.

32

Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.

If you bravely acknowledge me in front of others, I will proudly acknowledge you in front of my Heavenly Father.

33

But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.

If you reject me in front of others, I too will reject you in front of my Heavenly Father.

34

Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

Don't assume I'm here to bring tranquility to the world. My purpose isn't to spread peace, but to stir conflict.

35

For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

I have arrived to stir up conflict, causing sons to disagree with fathers, daughters to clash with mothers, and daughters-in-law to quarrel with their mothers-in-law.

36

And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household.

Even those within your own home may become your enemies.

37

He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

If you love your parents or children more than you love me, you are not worthy of me.

38

And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.

If you don't take up your cross and follow my path, you are not worthy of me.

39

He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

Those who cling too tightly to their lives will lose them. But those who let go of their lives for my cause will truly discover them.

40

He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

When someone welcomes you, they're also welcoming me. And by welcoming me, they're welcoming the one who sent me.

41

He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward.

When you welcome a prophet as a prophet, you'll be blessed with the same reward as a prophet. Similarly, if you honor a good person because of their goodness, you'll share in the blessings of their goodness.

42

And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.

Anyone who offers even a simple drink of cold water to one of these little ones because they are my follower, I assure you, will not lose their reward.
