1 Corinthians 12, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.

Dear friends, I don't want you to be unaware about the gifts of the spirit.

2

Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led.

You're aware that you were once outsiders, blindly following silent idols, simply because you were told to.

3

Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.

I want you to know, no one who is truly guided by God's Spirit would ever say Jesus is cursed. And only those touched by the Holy Spirit can truly proclaim Jesus as Lord.

4

Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

Different people have different gifts, but they all come from the same Spirit.

5

And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.

Different roles we play, but guided by one God.

6

And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.

There are many different ways things work, but it's the same God who makes everything happen.

7

But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

The Spirit's gifts are given to each of us for the good of everyone.

8

For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;

The Spirit grants one person the gift of wisdom, while another receives the gift of knowledge from the same Spirit.

9

To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;

One person is given unwavering faith by the Spirit; another is blessed with the ability to heal, all from the same divine Spirit.

10

To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

One person may be gifted with performing miracles; another may have the gift of speaking God's message; yet another may have the insight to tell spirits apart; some may speak in different languages; while others may have the ability to interpret those languages.

11

But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

The same divine Spirit is at work in all of us, distributing unique gifts to each person as it sees fit.

12

For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.

Just as our body is a single unit made up of various parts working together, so too is Christ - a unified entity composed of many diverse elements.

13

For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

Through one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Gentiles, slaves or free, and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

14

For the body is not one member, but many.

Our body isn't just one part, it's made up of many.

15

If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?

If the foot, feeling inferior, declares, "I'm not the hand, so I don't belong to the body," does it stop being part of the body? No, it doesn't.

16

And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?

If the ear declares, "Since I'm not an eye, I don't belong to the body," does that make it any less a part of the body?

17

If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?

If our entire body was just an eye, how could we hear? If we were all ears, how could we smell?

18

But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.

God has lovingly placed each part in the body, exactly as He intended.

19

And if they were all one member, where were the body?

If everyone were the same, where would the diversity of the body be?

20

But now are they many members, yet but one body.

Though we are many individuals, we are united as one entity.

21

And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.

The eye can't tell the hand, "I don't need you." Neither can the head say to the feet, "I don't need you."

22

Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary:

Indeed, even those parts of the body that appear weak are essential.

23

And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness.

Even the parts of the body we consider less worthy, we treat with extra respect, and the parts we keep covered are treated with special modesty.

24

For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked.

Our attractive features don't need extra attention. But God, in His wisdom, has crafted our bodies, giving extra honor to the parts that seemed less significant.

25

That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.

Let there be no division among us; instead, let's care for each other equally.

26

And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.

When one of us hurts, we all feel the pain; when one of us is celebrated, we all share the joy.

27

Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.

Together you are the body of Christ, and each of you is a vital part of it.

28

And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.

God has lovingly placed different roles in the church: first, the apostles, then prophets, followed by teachers. After these come miracles and healing gifts, support roles, leadership, and various languages.

29

Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles?

Does everyone serve as apostles? Do we all have the gift of prophecy? Can each of us teach? Can everyone perform miracles?

30

Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?

Does everyone possess the gift of healing? Can everyone communicate in different languages? Can everyone understand and explain these languages?

31

But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.

Passionately desire the greatest gifts, but let me guide you to an even better path.
