1 Corinthians 5, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father’s wife.

It's widely known that there's sexual immorality among you, even to the extent of someone being involved with his stepmother - a sin not even the non-believers would dare to commit.

2

And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.

You're acting arrogant instead of feeling sorrowful, as you should, for the one who committed this act should be removed from your midst.

3

For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,

Even though I'm not physically there, my spirit is. I've already made a judgment about the person who committed this act, as if I were there.

4

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,

When you gather together in the name of our beloved Lord Jesus Christ, with my spirit present among you and the power of our Lord Jesus with you,

5

To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

Hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of his flesh, so that his spirit may be saved when the day of Lord Jesus comes.

6

Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?

Your bragging isn't good. Don't you realize that a little sin, like a little yeast, works its way through the whole batch?

7

Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:

Clear out the old yeast of sin from among you, so you can be a fresh batch, pure as you truly are. Remember, Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed for us.

8

Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

Let's celebrate, not with the bitterness of past wrongs or the yeast of evil, but with the pure, honest bread of kindness and truth.

9

I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators:

I advised you in my letter not to hang out with those who engage in sexual immorality.

10

Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.

I didn't mean you must completely avoid the sexually immoral people of this world, or the greedy, the swindlers, or those who worship false gods. If you did, you'd have to leave this world.

11

But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.

I've told you, don't associate with anyone who claims to be a fellow believer but is sexually immoral, greedy, worships idols, abusive, a drunk, or cheats others. Don't even share a meal with such a person.

12

For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within?

Why should I pass judgment on those outside my circle? Isn't it your job to judge those within your own group?

13

But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.

God will judge those who don't believe. So, expel that wicked man from among you.
