1 Corinthians 2, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.

My dear friends, when I arrived among you, I didn't come with grand words or high-minded wisdom. I simply shared God's truth with you.

2

For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

I chose to focus solely on understanding Jesus Christ and his sacrifice on the cross, amidst you all.

3

And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.

I stood by your side, vulnerable and scared, shaking with intense fear.

4

And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:

My words and sermons were not filled with clever human wisdom, but were a powerful display of the Spirit's truth and might.

5

That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

Don't base your beliefs on human wisdom, but on God's mighty power.

6

Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:

Though we share wisdom with those who are mature, it's not the worldly wisdom or the fleeting knowledge of worldly leaders.

7

But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:

We share God's profound wisdom, a divine secret, a wisdom that was destined for our glory even before the world began.

8

Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

None of the rulers of this world understood it, for if they had, they would never have crucified the glorious Lord.

9

But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

Simply put, no one has ever seen, heard, or even imagined the incredible blessings that God has in store for those who truly love Him.

10

But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

God has shown us His secrets through His Spirit, because the Spirit explores everything, even the profound depths of God's nature.

11

For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

Who truly understands a person's thoughts except their own inner spirit? In the same way, no one can truly comprehend God's thoughts except God's own Spirit.

12

Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

We've been gifted, not with worldly desires, but with God's divine spirit. This allows us to truly understand and appreciate all the blessings God freely bestows upon us.

13

Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

We share these truths, not with words taught by human wisdom, but with those taught by the Holy Spirit, explaining spiritual things in spiritual words.

14

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

A person living only by worldly standards can't grasp God's spiritual truths. They seem absurd to him, as he lacks the spiritual insight to understand them.

15

But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

A spiritual person can judge all things, yet no one is in a position to judge him.

16

For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

Who can truly grasp God's thoughts to guide Him? Yet, we are blessed with the understanding of Christ.
