1 Corinthians 13, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

Even if I speak in human or angelic languages, without love, I'm just making noise like a clanging cymbal.

2

And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

Even if I have the gift of prophecy, comprehend every secret, possess all knowledge, and have such strong faith that I can move mountains, without love, I am absolutely nothing.

3

And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

Even if I give away everything I own to help the needy, and even if I sacrifice my own life, but lack love, it's all pointless.

4

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

Love is patient and kind; it doesn't envy or boast; it's not arrogant or proud.

5

Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

Doesn't act inappropriately, doesn't pursue selfish desires, isn't easily angered, and harbors no ill thoughts.

6

Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;

Love doesn't find joy in wrongdoing, but finds happiness in the truth.

7

Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

Carries every burden, trusts without limit, always hopeful, withstands any challenge.

8

Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

Love never fails. Even when prophecies, languages, and knowledge end, love remains.

9

For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.

We only understand a fraction, and our prophecy is only partial.

10

But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

When perfection arrives, all that is incomplete will disappear.

11

When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

As a kid, I talked, understood, and thought like one. But growing up, I left my childish ways behind.

12

For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

Now, our understanding is clouded, like peering through a murky mirror; but one day, we will see clearly, as if face-to-face. Now, I grasp only a fraction of the truth, but then, I will fully understand, just as I am fully known.

13

And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

Faith, hope, and love remain with us always, but love shines brightest of all.
