1 Corinthians 3, verse by verse
Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.
And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.
My dear friends, I couldn't talk to you as spiritually mature people. I had to speak to you as if you were still driven by your worldly desires, like infants in your faith journey with Christ.
I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.
I've nourished you gently, like a baby with milk, not with solid food, for you weren't ready then and even now, you're not quite prepared.
For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?
You are still driven by worldly desires. When jealousy, conflict, and division exist among you, aren't you living as mere humans, not as spiritual beings?
For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?
When one claims, "I follow Paul," and another, "I follow Apollos," isn't that just human rivalry?
Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man?
Who are Paul and Apollos, really? They're just humble servants who helped you find your faith, each given their role by God.
I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.
I sowed the seeds, Apollos nurtured them; but it was God who made them flourish.
So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.
In the end, it's not about the one who plants or waters, but about God who makes things grow.
Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.
The one who sows and the one who waters work together, united in purpose. And each will be rewarded fairly for their own hard work.
For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.
Together, we work hand in hand with God. You are God's nurtured garden, God's building.
According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.
God's grace has been generously given to me, allowing me to lay the foundation as a wise architect. Someone else may build upon it, but everyone should be mindful of how they build on it.
For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
No one can establish a foundation other than the one already set, which is Jesus Christ.
Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;
If anyone enhances this foundation with valuable or ordinary materials like gold, silver, gems, wood, hay, or straw;
Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is.
Everyone's actions will be exposed and judged. The truth will come out, as if illuminated by a blazing fire, testing the true nature of each person's deeds.
If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
If a person's efforts stand the test of time, they will be rewarded.
If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.
If what a person has built is burned up, he will suffer loss. However, he himself will still be saved, though only like someone escaping through fire.
Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
Don't you realize that you are God's sanctuary, and His divine spirit lives within you?
If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
If anyone destroys God's sacred home, God will destroy him. For God's home is holy, and you are that sacred home.
Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise.
Don't fool yourself. If you think you're worldly-wise, embrace humility to truly gain wisdom.
For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.
God sees worldly wisdom as folly. He outsmarts the cunning with their own schemes.
And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.
Once more, God understands the ideas of the wise, realizing they are often meaningless.
Therefore let no man glory in men. For all things are yours;
Don't boast about human leaders, for everything belongs to you.
Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours;
No matter if it's Paul, Apollos, Cephas, the world, life, death, the present, or the future - everything belongs to you.
And ye are Christ’s; and Christ is God’s.
You belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.
