Zechariah 2, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

I lifted up mine eyes again, and looked, and behold a man with a measuring line in his hand.

Once more, I raised my gaze, and there, I saw a man, holding a measuring tape in his hand.

2

Then said I, Whither goest thou? And he said unto me, To measure Jerusalem, to see what is the breadth thereof, and what is the length thereof.

I asked, "Where are you going?" He replied, "I'm off to measure Jerusalem, to find out how wide and long it is."

3

And, behold, the angel that talked with me went forth, and another angel went out to meet him,

Suddenly, the angel who was speaking to me left, and another angel came forward to greet him.

4

And said unto him, Run, speak to this young man, saying, Jerusalem shall be inhabited as towns without walls for the multitude of men and cattle therein:

He urged him, "Go, tell the youth, 'Jerusalem will thrive, not confined by walls, but open and bustling with people and livestock.'"

5

For I, saith the LORD, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and will be the glory in the midst of her.

I promise, says the Lord, to surround her with my protective fire, and to shine brightly as her glory from within.

6

Ho, ho, come forth, and flee from the land of the north, saith the LORD: for I have spread you abroad as the four winds of the heaven, saith the LORD.

Hey, hey, quickly leave the northern lands, says the Lord. I've scattered you like the four winds across the heavens, says the Lord.

7

Deliver thyself, O Zion, that dwellest with the daughter of Babylon.

Escape, oh Zion, you who live among the people of Babylon!

8

For thus saith the LORD of hosts; After the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you: for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye.

The Lord declares, "After my glory, I was sent to those who harmed you. Anyone who hurts you, hurts my most cherished one."

9

For, behold, I will shake mine hand upon them, and they shall be a spoil to their servants: and ye shall know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me.

Watch, for I will wave my hand at them, and they will fall prey to those they once ruled. Then, you will truly understand that I am sent by the Lord Almighty.

10

Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the LORD.

Sing and celebrate with joy, dear people of Zion, for look, I am coming, and I will live among you, says the Lord.

11

And many nations shall be joined to the LORD in that day, and shall be my people: and I will dwell in the midst of thee, and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto thee.

On that day, numerous nations will unite under God, becoming His people. God will live among you, and you'll realize that it's the Lord who has sent me to you.

12

And the LORD shall inherit Judah his portion in the holy land, and shall choose Jerusalem again.

The Lord will lovingly claim Judah, His cherished piece of the sacred earth, and will joyfully choose Jerusalem once more.

13

Be silent, O all flesh, before the LORD: for he is raised up out of his holy habitation.

Hush, every living being, in the presence of the LORD. He has risen from his sacred home.
