2 Chronicles 17, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

And Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his stead, and strengthened himself against Israel.

Jehoshaphat, his son, took his father's throne, fortifying himself with courage against Israel.

2

And he placed forces in all the fenced cities of Judah, and set garrisons in the land of Judah, and in the cities of Ephraim, which Asa his father had taken.

He strategically stationed troops in Judah's fortified cities, and established military posts in the land of Judah and Ephraim's cities, previously conquered by his father, Asa.

3

And the LORD was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the first ways of his father David, and sought not unto Baalim;

God was always by Jehoshaphat's side, for he followed the righteous path of his ancestor David, never straying towards false gods.

4

But sought to the Lord God of his father, and walked in his commandments, and not after the doings of Israel.

He passionately sought his father's God, choosing to follow His commands rather than imitating Israel's actions.

5

Therefore the LORD stablished the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah brought to Jehoshaphat presents; and he had riches and honour in abundance.

So, God firmly placed the kingdom into Jehoshaphat's grasp. Everyone in Judah showered him with gifts, leading to his immense wealth and high respect.

6

And his heart was lifted up in the ways of the LORD: moreover he took away the high places and groves out of Judah.

His heart swelled with love for the LORD's path, and he courageously removed all idols from Judah.

7

Also in the third year of his reign he sent to his princes, even to Benhail, and to Obadiah, and to Zechariah, and to Nethaneel, and to Michaiah, to teach in the cities of Judah.

In his third year as king, he reached out to his trusted advisors - Benhail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethaneel, and Michaiah. He asked them to educate the people in the cities of Judah.

8

And with them he sent Levites, even Shemaiah, and Nethaniah, and Zebadiah, and Asahel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehonathan, and Adonijah, and Tobijah, and Tobadonijah, Levites; and with them Elishama and Jehoram, priests.

He sent them along with Levites, including Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah, and Tobadonijah. Elishama and Jehoram, the priests, also accompanied them.

9

And they taught in Judah, and had the book of the law of the LORD with them, and went about throughout all the cities of Judah, and taught the people.

They passionately educated in Judah, carrying with them the sacred book of God's law. They journeyed across every city in Judah, spreading knowledge and wisdom among the people.

10

And the fear of the LORD fell upon all the kingdoms of the lands that were round about Judah, so that they made no war against Jehoshaphat.

Awe for the Lord swept across all neighboring kingdoms of Judah, instilling such respect that they dared not wage war against Jehoshaphat.

11

Also some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat presents, and tribute silver; and the Arabians brought him flocks, seven thousand and seven hundred rams, and seven thousand and seven hundred he goats.

Some Philistines brought Jehoshaphat presents and silver as tribute. Similarly, the Arabians brought him a massive flock of 7,700 rams and 7,700 he-goats.

12

And Jehoshaphat waxed great exceedingly; and he built in Judah castles, and cities of store.

Jehoshaphat's power and influence grew immensely. He constructed impressive fortresses and abundant cities throughout Judah.

13

And he had much business in the cities of Judah: and the men of war, mighty men of valour, were in Jerusalem.

He kept large supplies in the cities of Judah. Jerusalem was home to brave and powerful warriors.

14

And these are the numbers of them according to the house of their fathers: Of Judah, the captains of thousands; Adnah the chief, and with him mighty men of valour three hundred thousand.

This is the count according to their family lines: From Judah, the leaders of thousands; Adnah the head, and with him, three hundred thousand brave and strong warriors.

15

And next to him was Jehohanan the captain, and with him two hundred and fourscore thousand.

Beside him stood Jehohanan, the brave leader, commanding an impressive force of 280,000 loyal souls.

16

And next him was Amasiah the son of Zichri, who willingly offered himself unto the LORD; and with him two hundred thousand mighty men of valour.

Beside him stood Amasiah, Zichri's son, who bravely dedicated himself to God. He was accompanied by two hundred thousand courageous warriors.

17

And of Benjamin; Eliada a mighty man of valour, and with him armed men with bow and shield two hundred thousand.

From the tribe of Benjamin, came Eliada, a brave and powerful warrior. Alongside him, two hundred thousand men, armed with bows and shields, ready for battle.

18

And next him was Jehozabad, and with him an hundred and fourscore thousand ready prepared for the war.

Beside him stood Jehozabad, leading a formidable army of 180,000 warriors, all primed and ready for battle.

19

These waited on the king, beside those whom the king put in the fenced cities throughout all Judah.

These individuals served the king, in addition to those whom the king stationed in the fortified cities across Judah.
