2 Corinthians 1, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, unto the church of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints which are in all Achaia:

Paul, chosen by God to spread Jesus' teachings, and Timothy, our spiritual sibling, send their heartfelt greetings to the faithful community in Corinth and all the devoted followers throughout Achaia.

2

Grace be to you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

May you feel the calming serenity and loving kindness from our divine Father, God, and from our Savior, Jesus Christ.

3

Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;

Praise be to God, the loving Father of our Savior Jesus Christ, the source of all mercy and the one who comforts us in all situations.

4

Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

God soothes us in our struggles, so we can share that same comfort with others in their times of trouble, using the peace we've received from Him.

5

For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.

As we endure hardships like Christ did, we also find immense comfort through Him.

6

And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.

When we face hardships, it's to help you find comfort and salvation, which becomes real as you endure similar struggles. And when we're comforted, it's so you too may feel comforted and saved.

7

And our hope of you is stedfast, knowing, that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation.

We firmly believe in you, knowing that if you share in our hardships, you will also share in our comfort.

8

For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life:

Dear friends, we don't want you to be unaware of the hardships we faced in Asia. Our struggles were so intense, beyond our strength, that we even lost hope for life.

9

But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead:

We felt the shadow of death within us, a stark reminder not to rely on our own strength, but to place our trust in God, the one who brings the dead back to life.

10

Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;

He saved us from the brink of death, continues to rescue us, and we believe He will always be our savior.

11

Ye also helping together by prayer for us, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of many persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf.

You help us too by praying for us, so that many people will thank God on our behalf for the blessing granted us in answer to their many prayers.

12

For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.

Our joy comes from knowing that we've lived with pure hearts and sincere faith, not relying on worldly wisdom, but on God's grace. We've interacted with the world and especially with you, in this honest and humble way.

13

For we write none other things unto you, than what ye read or acknowledge; and I trust ye shall acknowledge even to the end;

We only share with you what you can read or understand, and we believe you'll continue to understand it forever.

14

As also ye have acknowledged us in part, that we are your rejoicing, even as ye also are ours in the day of the Lord Jesus.

You've recognized us in part and can be proud of us, just as we'll be proud of you on the day of the Lord Jesus.

15

And in this confidence I was minded to come unto you before, that ye might have a second benefit;

With complete trust, I planned to visit you earlier, so you could receive another blessing.

16

And to pass by you into Macedonia, and to come again out of Macedonia unto you, and of you to be brought on my way toward Judaea.

I planned to visit you on my way to Macedonia, return to you from there, and then, with your support, continue on to Judaea.

17

When I therefore was thus minded, did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be yea yea, and nay nay?

So, when I made up my mind, was I frivolous? Or do I make plans based on worldly desires, so that my yes and no are inconsistent?

18

But as God is true, our word toward you was not yea and nay.

God is truthful, and so were our promises to you - they were not inconsistent or uncertain.

19

For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea.

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, whom we, including me, Silvanus, and Timotheus, have shared about with you, was not inconsistent or uncertain. Instead, He was a firm and resolute 'yes'.

20

For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.

In Him, every promise God has made is a resounding 'yes' and a heartfelt 'Amen', all to showcase God's glory through us.

21

Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;

The one who strengthens our bond with you through Christ, and blesses us with His grace, is none other than God.

22

Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.

God has marked us as His own and put His Spirit in our hearts as a pledge of what is to come.

23

Moreover I call God for a record upon my soul, that to spare you I came not as yet unto Corinth.

I swear to God, my deepest conscience bears witness, that I refrained from coming to Corinth only to protect you.

24

Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for by faith ye stand.

We don't control your beliefs, but we're here to support your happiness. After all, it's your faith that keeps you strong.
