2 Corinthians 2, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

But I determined this with myself, that I would not come again to you in heaviness.

I made a promise to myself, not to return to you burdened with sorrow.

2

For if I make you sorry, who is he then that maketh me glad, but the same which is made sorry by me?

If I upset you, who can cheer me up except the one I've hurt?

3

And I wrote this same unto you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.

I wrote this to you so that when I arrive, I won't be saddened by those I should find joy in. I trust in all of you, knowing that my happiness is also your happiness.

4

For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you.

I wrote to you from a place of deep pain and sorrow, not to upset you, but to show you the immense love I have for you.

5

But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all.

If someone has caused sorrow, it's not just me who feels it, but not entirely. I say this so as not to burden you all too much.

6

Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many.

This man has suffered enough from the punishment given by many.

7

So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.

Instead, you should forgive and console him, so he isn't overwhelmed by excessive sadness.

8

Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him.

I urge you to openly express your love for him.

9

For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things.

I wrote this to test your loyalty, to see if you follow all commands.

10

To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ;

When you forgive someone, I forgive them too. If I've forgiven anyone, it was for your benefit and done in the spirit of Christ's love.

11

Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

We won't let Satan outsmart us, for we are well aware of his tricks.

12

Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ’s gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord,

When I arrived in Troas to share the message of Christ, I felt a divine opportunity presented to me by the Lord.

13

I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went from thence into Macedonia.

My heart was restless, for I couldn't find my brother Titus. So, with a heavy heart, I bid them farewell and journeyed to Macedonia.

14

Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.

Gratitude fills our hearts for God, who constantly leads us to victory through Christ. His wisdom, revealed through us, touches every corner of the world.

15

For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:

We are like a pleasing fragrance of Christ to God, felt by those who find salvation and even those who are lost.

16

To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?

To some, we bring the bitter taste of death; to others, the sweet essence of life. Who is truly capable of handling such extremes?

17

For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.

Unlike many who distort God's message, we speak with genuine hearts, guided by God's truth, expressing our faith in Christ with God as our witness.
