Ephesians 2, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

He breathed life into you, who were dead in your sins and wrongdoings.

2

Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

In the past, you lived as the world dictated, following the ruler of the powers of the air, the spirit now at work in the hearts of the disobedient.

3

Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

In the past, we all lived driven by our physical desires and thoughts, indulging our selfish cravings. By nature we deserved God's wrath, just like everyone else.

4

But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

God, abundant in compassion, deeply loves us with an immense love.

5

Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

Even when we were dead in our wrongdoings, He made us alive together with Christ. It's by His grace that we are saved.

6

And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

In unity, He has lifted us, placing us side by side in the divine realms through our bond with Christ Jesus.

7

That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

In the future, He will reveal the immense depth of His grace and kindness towards us, all thanks to Jesus Christ.

8

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Through God's loving kindness, you are rescued by your belief. Remember, this isn't your doing, it's a divine gift from God.

9

Not of works, lest any man should boast.

It's not about what you do, so no one can brag about their deeds.

10

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

We are God's masterpiece, crafted through Jesus for doing good, as God has always planned for us to live a life of goodness.

11

Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;

Remember, once upon a time, you were outsiders by birth, labeled 'the uncircumcised' by those who call themselves 'the circumcised' because of a ritual done on the body by human hands.

12

That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:

Once upon a time, you lived without knowing Christ, feeling like outsiders, disconnected from Israel's community and God's promises. You were hopeless, living in a world without God's presence.

13

But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

Now, through Jesus Christ, those who once felt distant have been brought close by His sacrifice.

14

For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;

He is our tranquility, uniting us as one, tearing down the barriers that once divided us.

15

Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;

Through his own sacrifice, he erased the hostility, even the rules set by laws; to unite two into one new being, thus creating harmony.

16

And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:

Through the sacrifice on the cross, He brought us all together as one, erasing the hostility, to unite us with God.

17

And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.

He brought a message of peace to those near and far, spreading tranquility to all.

18

For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

Through Him, we are united and guided by a single Spirit, leading us to our Father.

19

Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;

You're no longer outsiders or aliens. Instead, you're part of God's family, sharing citizenship with His holy people.

20

And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;

You are rooted in the teachings of the apostles and prophets, with Jesus Christ as the essential, guiding cornerstone.

21

In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:

In unity, every piece of the building comes together, blossoming into a sacred sanctuary for the Lord.

22

In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

Together, you too are being built into a home where God lives through His Spirit.
