Ephesians 5, verse by verse
Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.
Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;
Embrace God's path with the innocence and love of cherished children.
And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
Live your life with love, just as Christ loved us so deeply that he gave up his own life as a gift to God, a beautiful act of selfless devotion.
But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;
Avoid any form of sexual immorality, impurity, or greed. These actions should never be associated with you, as they are not fitting for those who strive to be virtuous.
Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.
Avoid dirty behavior, senseless chatter, and inappropriate jokes. Instead, express gratitude.
For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
Be certain of this: those who indulge in sexual immorality, those who are impure, and those who are greedy, which is a kind of idol worship, have no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.
Don't let anyone fool you with empty talk. Such actions invite God's anger upon those who defy Him.
Be not ye therefore partakers with them.
Don't join them in their actions.
For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
Once, you were lost in darkness, but now you've found the light in the Lord. Live as if you're bathed in that divine light.
(For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
The Spirit's gift is pure goodness, righteousness, and truth that fills our hearts.
Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
Discovering what pleases the Lord.
And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
Avoid engaging with harmful actions that bring darkness, instead, correct them with love.
For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.
It's deeply unsettling to even mention the things they do behind closed doors.
But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.
Everything that is corrected is revealed in the light, for the light itself brings clarity and truth.
Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.
He calls out, "Wake up, you who are sleeping, rise from your lifeless state, and Christ will fill you with light."
See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,
Be mindful of your actions, don't behave foolishly, but with wisdom.
Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
Make the most of every moment, for these are evil days.
Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.
Don't be foolish, instead, strive to comprehend God's intentions.
And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
Don't lose yourself in the haze of too much wine; instead, let your heart overflow with the divine Spirit.
Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
Express your feelings and thoughts through sacred songs and hymns, let your heart sing a joyful melody to the Lord.
Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
Always express gratitude for everything to God, our Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.
Submit to one another, out of your reverence for God.
Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
Wives, submit to your own husbands, just as you do to the Lord.
For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
For the husband is the head of his wife, just as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and he is its Savior.
Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
Just as the church lovingly follows Christ's lead, wives should also lovingly respect and follow their husband's guidance in all aspects of life.
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
Men, cherish your wives with the same selfless love that Christ showed when he sacrificed himself for the church.
That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
So that he could purify and cleanse it, using the word like a refreshing shower of water.
That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
He desired to see the church in all its glory, pure and perfect, without a single flaw, a sacred place free from any blemish.
So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
Men should cherish their wives as they do their own bodies. Loving your wife is a reflection of self-love.
For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:
No one ever despises their own body; instead, they care for and love it, just as God does for the church.
For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
We are deeply connected to him, part of his very being, his flesh and bones.
For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
For love, a man will leave his parents, unite with his wife, and together, they'll become one.
This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
This is a profound secret: I'm talking about the deep connection between Christ and the church.
Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
Each of you should love your wife as much as you love yourself, and wives should respect their husbands deeply.
