Ephesians 4, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,

As a prisoner for the Lord's sake, I urge you to live a life that truly reflects your divine calling.

2

With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;

In utmost humility and gentleness, patiently endure each other's flaws, all while nurturing love for one another.

3

Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Striving to maintain spiritual harmony through the ties of peace.

4

There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;

We are all part of a single entity, united by one divine Spirit, bound together by the shared hope that our purpose brings.

5

One Lord, one faith, one baptism,

A single divine guide, a unified belief, a solitary initiation into faith.

6

One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

There is a single divine Parent, God, who is greater than everything, present in everything, and lives within each one of us.

7

But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.

Each of us is blessed with grace, given in the measure that Christ chooses to give it.

8

Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.

Thus it is said, when He rose to the heavens, He triumphed over imprisonment, bestowing blessings upon humanity.

9

(Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?

His rise to the heavens only means that he first journeyed through the depths of the earth.

10

He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)

The one who humbly came down is the same one who gloriously rose above all realms of existence, so he could be present in everything.

11

And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

He generously gifted some as apostles, others as prophets, some became evangelists, while others were chosen to be pastors and teachers.

12

For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

To help believers grow, to carry out God's work, and to strengthen the community of Christ.

13

Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

Until we all unite in faith, truly understand Jesus, and become complete, embodying the full essence of Christ's love and grace.

14

That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

From now on, let's not be like naive children, swayed and misled by every new teaching or deceptive scheme people use to trick us.

15

But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

Expressing honesty with love, we may mature in every aspect of life, guided by our leader, Christ.

16

From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

From Christ the whole body, perfectly connected and supported by each joint, grows and strengthens itself in love, as each part does its work.

17

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,

So I tell you this, and I insist on it in the Lord: don't live any longer the way the Gentiles live, with their empty, futile thinking.

18

Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:

Their understanding is clouded, and they are cut off from the life of God because of the ignorance in them, which comes from the hardness of their hearts.

19

Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.

Those who've become numb have surrendered to lust, indulging in all forms of impurity with insatiable greed.

20

But ye have not so learned Christ;

But that is not the way you came to know Christ.

21

If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:

If you've truly listened to Him and learned from His teachings, as the truth is found in Jesus:

22

That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

Let go of your past self, tainted by deceitful desires, and embrace change.

23

And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

Refresh your thoughts and feelings; rejuvenate your inner spirit.

24

And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Embrace your renewed self, crafted by God in the essence of righteousness and pure holiness.

25

Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

Stop lying and always be honest with each other, because we're all part of the same community.

26

Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:

Feel your anger, but don't let it lead you to do wrong. Don't let the day end while you're still upset.

27

Neither give place to the devil.

Don't give the devil a foothold in your life.

28

Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.

Stop stealing, instead work hard and honestly. Use your earnings to help those in need.

29

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

Speak only kind and uplifting words, so that they may bring joy and encouragement to those who hear them.

30

And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

Don't upset the Holy Spirit of God, who has marked you as His until the day of salvation.

31

Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:

Let go of all your resentment, rage, anger, loud accusations, and harmful words. Remove all spite from your heart.

32

And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

Be kind and gentle to each other, forgive freely, just as God forgave you for the love of Christ.
