Genesis 13, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

And Abram went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the south.

Abram, filled with determination, led his wife, all his possessions, and Lot, away from Egypt and ventured into the southern lands.

2

And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold.

Abram was abundantly blessed, overflowing with livestock, silver, and gold.

3

And he went on his journeys from the south even to Bethel, unto the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Hai;

He continued his travels from the south towards Bethel, returning to the familiar spot where he first pitched his tent, nestled between Bethel and Hai.

4

Unto the place of the altar, which he had made there at the first: and there Abram called on the name of the LORD.

Abram returned to the sacred altar he'd built earlier, and there, he passionately invoked the name of the LORD.

5

And Lot also, which went with Abram, had flocks, and herds, and tents.

Lot, who journeyed with Abram, was also blessed with abundant livestock and comfortable tents.

6

And the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together: for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together.

The land simply couldn't support them living together, their wealth was too vast, making cohabitation impossible.

7

And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram’s cattle and the herdmen of Lot’s cattle: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land.

Tensions flared between Abram's and Lot's cattle herders, while the Canaanite and Perizzite tribes lived in the same territory.

8

And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren.

Abram pleaded with Lot, "Let's not fight, you and I, or our herdsmen. We're family, after all."

9

Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.

Isn't the world wide open before us? Please, let's part ways peacefully. If you choose to go left, I'll go right. If you decide to go right, I'll take the left path.

10

And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.

Lot gazed upon the lush, fertile plains of Jordan, a sight to behold, brimming with life and beauty, reminiscent of God's own garden. It was a paradise, like Egypt, before God's wrath fell upon Sodom and Gomorrah.

11

Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.

Lot, filled with longing, chose the lush plains of Jordan for himself. He journeyed towards the east, his heart heavy with the pain of separation from his kin.

12

Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.

Abram settled peacefully in the rustic land of Canaan, while Lot chose the bustling cities of the plain, setting up his home near Sodom.

13

But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.

The men of Sodom were deeply corrupt and profoundly sinful in the eyes of the Lord.

14

And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward:

After Lot had left him, God told Abram, "Look around you. See all the land in every direction - north, south, east, and west.

15

For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.

I promise, every piece of land you lay your eyes on, I'll give it to you and your descendants, forever.

16

And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered.

I promise to bless you with countless descendants, as numerous as the grains of sand on earth. Only when someone can count each grain, will they be able to count your descendants.

17

Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee.

Stand up, explore this land far and wide; for it's my gift to you.

18

Then Abram removed his tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the LORD.

Abram, filled with faith, packed up his tent and moved to the open fields of Mamre, in Hebron. There, he lovingly built an altar to honor the LORD.
