Genesis 34, verse by verse
Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.
And Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.
Dinah, Leah's daughter with Jacob, ventured out to meet the local girls.
And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.
When Shechem, son of Hamor the Hivite and ruler of the land, saw her, he seized her, forced himself on her, and so defiled her.
And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel.
His heart was deeply attached to Dinah, Jacob's daughter. He loved this young woman and always spoke to her with kindness and affection.
And Shechem spake unto his father Hamor, saying, Get me this damsel to wife.
Shechem pleaded with his father Hamor, "Father, I must marry this girl."
And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come.
Jacob learned of the violation committed against his daughter, Dinah. His sons were out tending to their livestock. Overwhelmed with sorrow and anger, he silently waited for their return.
And Hamor the father of Shechem went out unto Jacob to commune with him.
Hamor, Shechem's father, approached Jacob, his heart heavy with the need for conversation.
And the sons of Jacob came out of the field when they heard it: and the men were grieved, and they were very wroth, because he had wrought folly in Israel in lying with Jacob’s daughter: which thing ought not to be done.
When Jacob's sons heard what had happened, they left their work in the fields. They were deeply hurt and furious because a disgraceful act had been committed against their sister in Israel - something that should never have occurred.
And Hamor communed with them, saying, The soul of my son Shechem longeth for your daughter: I pray you give her him to wife.
Hamor pleaded with them, expressing, "My son Shechem yearns deeply for your daughter. Please, let her become his wife."
And make ye marriages with us, and give your daughters unto us, and take our daughters unto you.
Unite with us in love, offer us your daughters as brides, and accept ours as your own.
And ye shall dwell with us: and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade ye therein, and get you possessions therein.
Live among us, the world is open to you. Settle, do business, and prosper here.
And Shechem said unto her father and unto her brethren, Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye shall say unto me I will give.
Shechem pleaded with her father and brothers, "Please, look upon me with kindness. I will do whatever you ask of me."
Ask me never so much dowry and gift, and I will give according as ye shall say unto me: but give me the damsel to wife.
No matter the size of the dowry or gift you request, I'll provide it as you wish. But please, let me marry the girl.
And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and said, because he had defiled Dinah their sister:
Jacob's sons responded to Shechem and his father Hamor with hidden intentions, angered because Shechem had violated their sister Dinah.
And they said unto them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that were a reproach unto us:
They responded, "We can't let our sister marry someone who isn't circumcised. It would be a disgrace to us."
But in this will we consent unto you: If ye will be as we be, that every male of you be circumcised;
We agree on this condition: If you want to be like us, every man among you must be circumcised.
Then will we give our daughters unto you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.
We'll share our daughters in marriage, accept yours in return, live together, and unite as one family.
But if ye will not hearken unto us, to be circumcised; then will we take our daughter, and we will be gone.
If you refuse to listen to us about circumcision, we'll take our daughter and leave.
And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem Hamor’s son.
Hamor and his son Shechem felt joy and satisfaction from their words.
And the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob’s daughter: and he was more honourable than all the house of his father.
The young man didn't hesitate to act, for he was deeply in love with Jacob's daughter. He was the most respected man in all his father's household.
And Hamor and Shechem his son came unto the gate of their city, and communed with the men of their city, saying,
Hamor and his son Shechem approached the city gates, engaging in heartfelt conversation with their fellow townspeople, expressing,
These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade therein; for the land, behold, it is large enough for them; let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters.
These men mean us no harm; let's welcome them to live and trade in our vast lands. Let's unite our families by marrying their daughters and offering ours in return.
Only herein will the men consent unto us for to dwell with us, to be one people, if every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised.
The men will only agree to live with us and become one community if all our males undergo circumcision, just like they have.
Shall not their cattle and their substance and every beast of theirs be ours? only let us consent unto them, and they will dwell with us.
Won't all their livestock and possessions, including their animals, become ours? All we need to do is agree, and they will live among us.
And unto Hamor and unto Shechem his son hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city; and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city.
All the men of the city listened to Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male of the city underwent circumcision.
And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males.
On the third day, when their pain was at its peak, Jacob's sons Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, took their swords, came upon the unsuspecting city, and killed every male in it.
And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem’s house, and went out.
Swords in hand, they killed Hamor and his son Shechem. They took Dinah out of Shechem's home and departed.
The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and spoiled the city, because they had defiled their sister.
Jacob's sons came upon the bodies of the slain, and in their anger they ransacked the city that had dishonored their sister.
They took their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field,
They took their sheep, oxen, and donkeys, everything in the city and in the fields.
And all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives took they captive, and spoiled even all that was in the house.
They seized everything - their riches, their children, their wives. They left no stone unturned, stripping the house of all its contents.
And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me, and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.
Jacob, deeply upset, told Simeon and Levi, "You've put me in a terrible position, making us hated among the locals, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites. We're outnumbered; they could easily unite and kill us. This could mean the end of our family."
And they said, Should he deal with our sister as with an harlot?
They asked indignantly, "Should our sister be treated like a common prostitute?"
