Genesis 2, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.

And so, the vast heavens and the vibrant earth were beautifully completed, along with all their diverse inhabitants.

2

And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

After six days of creating, God finally took a deep breath on the seventh day, feeling a sense of peace and satisfaction from all that He had beautifully crafted.

3

And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it He rested from all the work of creation He had done.

4

These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens,

This is the story of how the universe and our world came into existence, on that divine day when God, in all His glory, crafted the heavens and the earth.

5

And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.

Before any plant sprouted from the earth or any herb bloomed, there was no rain, for God had not yet commanded it. And there was no man to nurture the soil.

6

But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.

A gentle fog rose from the earth, tenderly hydrating every inch of the land.

7

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

With tender care, God sculpted man from the earth's dust. He gently breathed life into him through his nostrils, and in that moment, man transformed into a living, feeling being.

8

And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.

With a heart full of love, God crafted a lush garden in the east of Eden. There, He gently placed the man He had lovingly shaped.

9

And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

From the earth, God lovingly nurtured each tree, beautiful to behold and bountiful with food. In the heart of the garden, He planted the tree of life and the tree that holds the knowledge of good and evil.

10

And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads.

A life-giving river flowed from Eden, nurturing the garden. From there, it divided, forming four distinct streams.

11

The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold;

The first river is named Pison, it gracefully encircles the entire land of Havilah, a place blessed with abundant gold.

12

And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone.

The gold from that place is pure and precious; it's where you'll find the fragrant bdellium and the stunning onyx stone.

13

And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia.

The second river, called Gihon, lovingly embraces the entire expanse of Ethiopia.

14

And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth toward the east of Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates.

The third river, known as Hiddekel, flows gently towards the eastern lands of Assyria. And the fourth, the mighty Euphrates, follows its course.

15

And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

With a tender heart, the LORD God gently placed the man in the lush Garden of Eden, entrusting him with its care and preservation.

16

And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

With a loving command, God told the man, "Feel free to enjoy the fruits of any tree in the garden."

17

But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

Don't eat from the tree of understanding right and wrong, because the day you do, you'll definitely face death.

18

And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

With a compassionate heart, the LORD God declared, "It's not right for man to be alone; I'll create a suitable companion for him."

19

And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.

From the earth, God lovingly crafted every animal and bird. He then presented them to Adam, curious to hear what names he would give. Whatever name Adam chose, that's what the creature became known as.

20

And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.

Adam named every animal, from the cows to the birds in the sky and all the creatures of the land. Yet, in all of creation, he couldn't find a suitable companion.

21

And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;

In a profound slumber, God gently lulled Adam. As he slept peacefully, God delicately extracted one of his ribs, then tenderly healed the wound.

22

And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.

From the man's rib, God lovingly crafted a woman, and gently presented her to him.

23

And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

Adam exclaimed, "She is a part of me, my very essence. We'll call her 'Woman', for she was born from Man."

24

Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

A man will lovingly leave his parents, passionately unite with his wife, and together, they will beautifully become one.

25

And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

The man and his wife stood together, bare and unashamed, their love and trust for each other eclipsing any sense of vulnerability.
