Genesis 14, verse by verse
Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.
And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of nations;
During the reign of Amraphel of Shinar, Arioch of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer of Elam, and Tidal, the king of many nations, significant events unfolded.
That these made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela, which is Zoar.
These waged battle against King Bera of Sodom, King Birsha of Gomorrah, King Shinab of Admah, King Shemeber of Zeboiim, and the King of Bela, also known as Zoar.
All these were joined together in the vale of Siddim, which is the salt sea.
All united in the valley of Siddim, known as the sea of salt.
Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled.
For twelve long years, they were bound in servitude to Chedorlaomer, their spirits crushed. But in the dawn of the thirteenth year, a spark of rebellion ignited their hearts.
And in the fourteenth year came Chedorlaomer, and the kings that were with him, and smote the Rephaims in Ashteroth Karnaim, and the Zuzims in Ham, and the Emins in Shaveh Kiriathaim,
In the 14th year, Chedorlaomer arrived with his allied kings. They fiercely defeated the Rephaims in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzims in Ham, and the Emins in Shaveh Kiriathaim.
And the Horites in their mount Seir, unto Elparan, which is by the wilderness.
They also struck down the Horites in the rugged mountains of Seir, as far as Elparan, near the vast, untamed wilderness.
And they returned, and came to Enmishpat, which is Kadesh, and smote all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, that dwelt in Hazezontamar.
They came back to Enmishpat, now known as Kadesh, with heavy hearts. There, they defeated the entire land of the Amalekites, and the Amorites living in Hazezontamar, leaving a trail of sorrow and destruction.
And there went out the king of Sodom, and the king of Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (the same is Zoar;) and they joined battle with them in the vale of Siddim;
The kings of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboiim, and Bela (also known as Zoar) bravely marched out. United, they faced their enemies in the valley of Siddim, their hearts pounding with the intensity of the impending battle.
With Chedorlaomer the king of Elam, and with Tidal king of nations, and Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar; four kings with five.
In the realm of Elam, Chedorlaomer ruled, alongside Tidal, the king of many nations. Amraphel held the throne in Shinar, and Arioch in Ellasar. Together, they were four kings, yet they stood against five.
And the vale of Siddim was full of slimepits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and fell there; and they that remained fled to the mountain.
The valley of Siddim was riddled with tar pits. The rulers of Sodom and Gomorrah, in their panic, fell into them while trying to escape. The few who survived sought refuge in the mountains.
And they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their victuals, and went their way.
They seized everything from Sodom and Gomorrah, even their food, and then left.
And they took Lot, Abram’s brother’s son, who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.
They seized Lot, Abram's nephew living in Sodom, along with all his possessions, and left.
And there came one that had escaped, and told Abram the Hebrew; for he dwelt in the plain of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner: and these were confederate with Abram.
A survivor arrived, breathless, with news for Abram the Hebrew, who was living peacefully in the plains of Mamre the Amorite. Mamre was the brother of Eshcol and Aner, both allies of Abram.
And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his trained servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them unto Dan.
When Abram learned his nephew was held captive, he felt a surge of determination. He quickly prepared his loyal servants, all 318 born under his own roof, for battle. With a heavy heart, they set off towards Dan, ready to rescue his nephew.
And he divided himself against them, he and his servants, by night, and smote them, and pursued them unto Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus.
In the cloak of night, he and his loyal servants bravely split up to confront their enemies. They struck them down and chased them all the way to Hobah, located to the north of Damascus.
And he brought back all the goods, and also brought again his brother Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people.
With a heart full of joy, he returned, carrying all their belongings. His nephew Lot was by his side, along with his possessions. The women and the rest of the people were safe, their faces glowing with relief and gratitude.
And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king’s dale.
After his victorious battle against Chedorlaomer and his allies, the king of Sodom, filled with gratitude and relief, journeyed to the valley of Shaveh, the royal valley, to personally welcome him back.
And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
Melchizedek, the king of Salem and a priest of the supreme God, lovingly presented bread and wine.
And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:
He showered him with blessings, saying, "May Abram, beloved of the supreme God who owns the heavens and the earth, be forever blessed."
And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.
Praise be to the Almighty God, who has defeated your foes for you. He gifted him a tenth of everything.
And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself.
The king of Sodom pleaded with Abram, "Please, let me have my people back, and you can keep all the possessions."
And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth,
Abram told the king of Sodom, "I've made a solemn promise to the Lord, the supreme God who owns the heavens and the earth."
That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich:
I won't accept even the smallest gift from you, not even a thread or a shoelace. I don't want you to ever claim that you're the reason for my wealth.
Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.
I'll take nothing except what my young men have already eaten, and the share of those who journeyed with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them claim their part.
