Joshua 11, verse by verse
Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.
And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor had heard those things, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph,
When Jabin, the king of Hazor, heard the news, he was deeply troubled. So, he quickly sent messages to Jobab, the king of Madon, and to the rulers of Shimron and Achshaph.
And to the kings that were on the north of the mountains, and of the plains south of Chinneroth, and in the valley, and in the borders of Dor on the west,
To the rulers in the north, near the mountains, and those in the south plains near Chinneroth, as well as those in the valley and on the western edges of Dor,
And to the Canaanite on the east and on the west, and to the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the mountains, and to the Hivite under Hermon in the land of Mizpeh.
And to the Canaanites in the east and west, to the Amorite, Hittite, Perizzite, and Jebusite in the hills, and to the Hivite beneath Mount Hermon in the land of Mizpeh.
And they went out, they and all their hosts with them, much people, even as the sand that is upon the sea shore in multitude, with horses and chariots very many.
They left, a vast crowd as countless as grains of sand on the seashore, accompanied by a multitude of horses and chariots.
And when all these kings were met together, they came and pitched together at the waters of Merom, to fight against Israel.
When all these kings united, they gathered at Merom's waters, ready to battle Israel.
And the LORD said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them: for to morrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: thou shalt hough their horses, and burn their chariots with fire.
The LORD comforted Joshua, "Don't fear them. By this time tomorrow, I'll hand them all over to Israel, slain. You'll cripple their horses and set their chariots ablaze."
So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of Merom suddenly; and they fell upon them.
Joshua and his warriors arrived unexpectedly at the shores of Merom, launching a surprise attack that left their enemies in disarray.
And the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel, who smote them, and chased them unto great Zidon, and unto Misrephothmaim, and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they smote them, until they left them none remaining.
The Lord empowered Israel, who fiercely defeated their enemies, pursuing them relentlessly to Zidon, Misrephothmaim, and the eastern valley of Mizpeh. They fought until not a single enemy remained.
And Joshua did unto them as the LORD bade him: he houghed their horses, and burnt their chariots with fire.
With unwavering obedience to God's command, Joshua bravely disabled their horses and set their chariots ablaze.
And Joshua at that time turned back, and took Hazor, and smote the king thereof with the sword: for Hazor beforetime was the head of all those kingdoms.
At that moment, Joshua, filled with determination, turned back and conquered Hazor, and he put its king to death with the sword. Hazor had once been the leading kingdom of them all.
And they smote all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them: there was not any left to breathe: and he burnt Hazor with fire.
They fiercely struck down every living soul in the city, showing no mercy, leaving none alive. Then, they set Hazor ablaze.
And all the cities of those kings, and all the kings of them, did Joshua take, and smote them with the edge of the sword, and he utterly destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the LORD commanded.
Joshua, following God's command through Moses, bravely conquered all the cities and their kings, defeating them with his sword, leaving nothing behind.
But as for the cities that stood still in their strength, Israel burned none of them, save Hazor only; that did Joshua burn.
But the cities still standing on their mounds, Israel did not burn, except for Hazor. Only Hazor did Joshua burn.
And all the spoil of these cities, and the cattle, the children of Israel took for a prey unto themselves; but every man they smote with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them, neither left they any to breathe.
The Israelites claimed all the goods and livestock from these cities as their own. However, they showed no mercy, killing every man with their swords, leaving none alive.
As the LORD commanded Moses his servant, so did Moses command Joshua, and so did Joshua; he left nothing undone of all that the LORD commanded Moses.
Just as God instructed Moses, Moses passed on these instructions to Joshua. Joshua, in turn, followed every command to the letter, not missing a single detail of what God had asked through Moses.
So Joshua took all that land, the hills, and all the south country, and all the land of Goshen, and the valley, and the plain, and the mountain of Israel, and the valley of the same;
With a heart full of courage, Joshua claimed every inch of the land - the rolling hills, the sun-drenched southern regions, the fertile lands of Goshen, the vast valleys, the flat plains, and the towering mountains of Israel.
Even from the mount Halak, that goeth up to Seir, even unto Baalgad in the valley of Lebanon under mount Hermon: and all their kings he took, and smote them, and slew them.
From the peak of Mount Halak, stretching to Seir, reaching as far as Baalgad in Lebanon's valley, beneath mighty Mount Hermon, Joshua captured all their kings, struck them down and put them to death.
Joshua made war a long time with all those kings.
For an extended period, Joshua fiercely battled against numerous kings.
There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon: all other they took in battle.
No city chose peace with Israel's children, except the Hivites of Gibeon. All others were conquered in battle.
For it was of the LORD to harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that he might destroy them utterly, and that they might have no favour, but that he might destroy them, as the LORD commanded Moses.
God intentionally hardened their hearts, leading them to fight Israel. His plan was to completely eliminate them, showing no mercy, just as He had instructed Moses.
And at that time came Joshua, and cut off the Anakims from the mountains, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel: Joshua destroyed them utterly with their cities.
At that time Joshua came and wiped out the Anakim from the hill country, from Hebron, Debir, Anab, and all the hill country of Judah and Israel. He completely destroyed them and their cities.
There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the children of Israel: only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, there remained.
No Anakims were left in Israel's land; only in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod, a few survived.
So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD said unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land rested from war.
Joshua, following God's instructions given to Moses, claimed the entire land. He then divided it among the tribes of Israel as their inheritance. Finally, the land was at peace, free from the turmoil of war.
