Joshua 13, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

Now Joshua was old and stricken in years; and the LORD said unto him, Thou art old and stricken in years, and there remaineth yet very much land to be possessed.

Joshua had grown old, his years weighing heavily on him. The LORD gently reminded him, "Joshua, you're aged and weary, yet there's still so much land waiting to be claimed."

2

This is the land that yet remaineth: all the borders of the Philistines, and all Geshuri,

This is the land still left to be taken: all the territory of the Philistines and all of Geshuri.

3

From Sihor, which is before Egypt, even unto the borders of Ekron northward, which is counted to the Canaanite: five lords of the Philistines; the Gazathites, and the Ashdothites, the Eshkalonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites; also the Avites:

From the river Sihor near Egypt, stretching to Ekron's northern edge, a land claimed by the Canaanites, lived five powerful Philistine rulers. They were from Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron, and not forgetting the people of Avvi.

4

From the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that is beside the Sidonians unto Aphek, to the borders of the Amorites:

From the warm south, across the entire expanse of the Canaanite lands, stretching to Mearah near the Sidonians, all the way to Aphek, right up to the boundaries of the Amorites.

5

And the land of the Giblites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrising, from Baalgad under mount Hermon unto the entering into Hamath.

The homeland of the Giblites too, and all of Lebanon to the east, stretching from Baalgad at the foot of Mount Hermon to the gates of Hamath.

6

All the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon unto Misrephothmaim, and all the Sidonians, them will I drive out from before the children of Israel: only divide thou it by lot unto the Israelites for an inheritance, as I have commanded thee.

I'll clear the mountain region from Lebanon to Misrephothmaim, including all the Sidonians, making way for the children of Israel. Just be sure to divide this land by lot among the Israelites as their inheritance, as I've instructed.

7

Now therefore divide this land for an inheritance unto the nine tribes, and the half tribe of Manasseh,

Now, lovingly share this land as a legacy among the nine tribes, including the half tribe of Manasseh.

8

With whom the Reubenites and the Gadites have received their inheritance, which Moses gave them, beyond Jordan eastward, even as Moses the servant of the LORD gave them;

The Reubenites and Gadites received their inheritance, a gift from Moses, on the eastern side of the Jordan. This was given to them by Moses, the faithful servant of the Lord.

9

From Aroer, that is upon the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the midst of the river, and all the plain of Medeba unto Dibon;

From the riverbank of Arnon in Aroer, to the city nestled within the river, and across the vast plains of Medeba, reaching all the way to Dibon.

10

And all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, which reigned in Heshbon, unto the border of the children of Ammon;

Every city under the rule of Sihon, the Amorite king who governed from Heshbon, extended to the boundaries of the Ammonite lands.

11

And Gilead, and the border of the Geshurites and Maachathites, and all mount Hermon, and all Bashan unto Salcah;

It also took in Gilead, the territories of the Geshurites and Maachathites, the whole of Mount Hermon, and all of Bashan up to Salcah.

12

All the kingdom of Og in Bashan, which reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei, who remained of the remnant of the giants: for these did Moses smite, and cast them out.

Moses bravely defeated and expelled the last of the giants, who ruled over Og's kingdom in Bashan, with its capitals in Ashtaroth and Edrei.

13

Nevertheless the children of Israel expelled not the Geshurites, nor the Maachathites: but the Geshurites and the Maachathites dwell among the Israelites until this day.

Yet the Israelites did not drive out the Geshurites and Maachathites. Even today, these two groups live among the Israelites.

14

Only unto the tribes of Levi he gave none inheritance; the sacrifices of the LORD God of Israel made by fire are their inheritance, as he said unto them.

Moses gave no land to the tribe of Levi; instead, the offerings made by fire to the Lord God of Israel are their inheritance, just as He had promised them.

15

And Moses gave unto the tribe of the children of Reuben inheritance according to their families.

Moses, with a heart full of generosity, bestowed upon the Reuben tribe their rightful inheritance, respecting each family's lineage.

16

And their coast was from Aroer, that is on the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the midst of the river, and all the plain by Medeba;

Their territory stretched from Aroer, on the edge of the Arnon River, including the city in the river's heart, and extended across the plains near Medeba.

17

Heshbon, and all her cities that are in the plain; Dibon, and Bamothbaal, and Bethbaalmeon,

Heshbon and all its surrounding towns on the plain, including Dibon, Bamothbaal, and Bethbaalmeon,

18

And Jahaza, and Kedemoth, and Mephaath,

Jahaza, Kedemoth, and Mephaath,

19

And Kirjathaim, and Sibmah, and Zarethshahar in the mount of the valley,

In the heart of the valley, there lay Kirjathaim, Sibmah, and Zarethshahar, nestled within the embrace of the mountains.

20

And Bethpeor, and Ashdothpisgah, and Bethjeshimoth,

Bethpeor, Ashdothpisgah, and Bethjeshimoth,

21

And all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, which reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses smote with the princes of Midian, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, which were dukes of Sihon, dwelling in the country.

Every city in the valley, every realm under King Sihon of the Amorites, who ruled from Heshbon, fell to Moses. He defeated the noble leaders of Midian - Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba - all vassals of King Sihon, living in the land.

22

Balaam also the son of Beor, the soothsayer, did the children of Israel slay with the sword among them that were slain by them.

Balaam, Beor's son and a fortune teller, was killed by the Israelites in a battle, along with others who fell to their swords.

23

And the border of the children of Reuben was Jordan, and the border thereof. This was the inheritance of the children of Reuben after their families, the cities and the villages thereof.

The children of Reuben had the Jordan River as their boundary. This was the land they inherited, clan by clan, with its cities and villages.

24

And Moses gave inheritance unto the tribe of Gad, even unto the children of Gad according to their families.

Moses, with a heart full of love and fairness, bestowed the inheritance upon the Gad tribe, ensuring each family within the tribe received their rightful share.

25

And their coast was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the children of Ammon, unto Aroer that is before Rabbah;

Their territory stretched from Jazer, encompassing all the towns of Gilead, and half of the Ammonite land, reaching up to Aroer, just before Rabbah.

26

And from Heshbon unto Ramathmizpeh, and Betonim; and from Mahanaim unto the border of Debir;

From Heshbon to Ramathmizpeh and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the edge of Debir's territory.

27

And in the valley, Betharam, and Bethnimrah, and Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, Jordan and his border, even unto the edge of the sea of Chinnereth on the other side Jordan eastward.

In the heart of the valley, where Betharam and Bethnimrah lay, along with Succoth and Zaphon, remained the remnants of King Sihon's reign in Heshbon. The Jordan river marked its boundary, stretching all the way to the shores of the sea of Chinnereth, on the eastern side of Jordan.

28

This is the inheritance of the children of Gad after their families, the cities, and their villages.

The children of Gad, bound by blood, were gifted with cities and villages as their cherished legacy.

29

And Moses gave inheritance unto the half tribe of Manasseh: and this was the possession of the half tribe of the children of Manasseh by their families.

Moses lovingly bestowed inheritance to the half tribe of Manasseh. This became the cherished possession of Manasseh's half tribe, treasured by each family.

30

And their coast was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, threescore cities:

Their territory stretched from Mahanaim, encompassing all of Bashan, the entire realm of King Og of Bashan, and all of Jair's towns located in Bashan, a total of sixty cities.

31

And half Gilead, and Ashtaroth, and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were pertaining unto the children of Machir the son of Manasseh, even to the one half of the children of Machir by their families.

Half of Gilead, along with Ashtaroth and Edrei, the cities of Og's kingdom in Bashan, were given to the descendants of Machir, son of Manasseh. Half of Machir's children, divided by their families, inherited these lands.

32

These are the countries which Moses did distribute for inheritance in the plains of Moab, on the other side Jordan, by Jericho, eastward.

Moses, with a heart full of duty, divided lands in the flatlands of Moab, across the Jordan river, near Jericho, towards the east, as an inheritance.

33

But unto the tribe of Levi Moses gave not any inheritance: the LORD God of Israel was their inheritance, as he said unto them.

Moses didn't give the Levi tribe any physical inheritance. Instead, their true wealth was in their relationship with the Lord God of Israel, just as He had promised them.
