Joshua 18, verse by verse
Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.
And the whole congregation of the children of Israel assembled together at Shiloh, and set up the tabernacle of the congregation there. And the land was subdued before them.
The entire community of Israel gathered in unity at Shiloh, establishing their place of worship. The land, in its tranquility, lay humbly at their feet.
And there remained among the children of Israel seven tribes, which had not yet received their inheritance.
Seven tribes among the children of Israel had still not received their inheritance.
And Joshua said unto the children of Israel, How long are ye slack to go to possess the land, which the LORD God of your fathers hath given you?
Joshua asked the people of Israel, "Why are you hesitating to claim the land that God, your ancestors' Lord, has gifted you?"
Give out from among you three men for each tribe: and I will send them, and they shall rise, and go through the land, and describe it according to the inheritance of them; and they shall come again to me.
Select three men from each tribe. I will guide them to explore the land and map it out based on their heritage. Afterward, they will return to me.
And they shall divide it into seven parts: Judah shall abide in their coast on the south, and the house of Joseph shall abide in their coasts on the north.
They'll split it into seven sections. Judah will peacefully settle in the southern border, while Joseph's family will find home in the northern edges.
Ye shall therefore describe the land into seven parts, and bring the description hither to me, that I may cast lots for you here before the LORD our God.
Divide the land into seven sections, then bring me the details. I'll cast lots for you here in God's presence.
But the Levites have no part among you; for the priesthood of the LORD is their inheritance: and Gad, and Reuben, and half the tribe of Manasseh, have received their inheritance beyond Jordan on the east, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave them.
The Levites don't share your land; their role as God's priests is their gift. Gad, Reuben, and half of Manasseh's tribe got their share across the Jordan to the east, as Moses, God's servant, granted them.
And the men arose, and went away: and Joshua charged them that went to describe the land, saying, Go and walk through the land, and describe it, and come again to me, that I may here cast lots for you before the LORD in Shiloh.
The men stood up, ready to leave. Joshua gave them a mission, "Explore the land, describe it in detail, and return to me. Then, here in Shiloh, I will cast lots for you before God."
And the men went and passed through the land, and described it by cities into seven parts in a book, and came again to Joshua to the host at Shiloh.
The men journeyed across the land, dividing it into seven regions, each marked by its cities. They recorded their findings in a book and returned to Joshua at the Shiloh camp.
And Joshua cast lots for them in Shiloh before the LORD: and there Joshua divided the land unto the children of Israel according to their divisions.
In the presence of God, Joshua, with a heart full of fairness, drew lots in Shiloh. There, he evenly distributed the land among the children of Israel, respecting their individual groups.
And the lot of the tribe of the children of Benjamin came up according to their families: and the coast of their lot came forth between the children of Judah and the children of Joseph.
The tribe of Benjamin, each family in its turn, received their land. Their territory lay nestled between the lands of the tribes of Judah and Joseph.
And their border on the north side was from Jordan; and the border went up to the side of Jericho on the north side, and went up through the mountains westward; and the goings out thereof were at the wilderness of Bethaven.
Their northern boundary began at the Jordan River, stretching up to Jericho's northern edge, then climbing westward through the mountainous terrain, finally ending in the wild, untamed expanse of Bethaven.
And the border went over from thence toward Luz, to the side of Luz, which is Bethel, southward; and the border descended to Atarothadar, near the hill that lieth on the south side of the nether Bethhoron.
The boundary line then crossed over towards Luz, also known as Bethel, passing along its southern side. It continued down to Atarothadar, close to the hill south of lower Bethhoron.
And the border was drawn thence, and compassed the corner of the sea southward, from the hill that lieth before Bethhoron southward; and the goings out thereof were at Kirjathbaal, which is Kirjathjearim, a city of the children of Judah: this was the west quarter.
The boundary line extended, hugging the southern edge of the sea, starting from the hill facing Bethhoron in the south. It ended at Kirjathbaal, also known as Kirjathjearim, a city belonging to the tribe of Judah. This marked the western region.
And the south quarter was from the end of Kirjathjearim, and the border went out on the west, and went out to the well of waters of Nephtoah:
The southern boundary started at Kirjathjearim's edge, extending westward, reaching the water well of Nephtoah.
And the border came down to the end of the mountain that lieth before the valley of the son of Hinnom, and which is in the valley of the giants on the north, and descended to the valley of Hinnom, to the side of Jebusi on the south, and descended to Enrogel,
The boundary line gently traced the foot of the mountain, overlooking the valley belonging to Hinnom's son. It lay in the valley of the giants, up north, then it dipped down into the Hinnom valley, brushing past Jebusi's southern edge, and finally, it descended to meet Enrogel.
And was drawn from the north, and went forth to Enshemesh, and went forth toward Geliloth, which is over against the going up of Adummim, and descended to the stone of Bohan the son of Reuben,
From there the border curved round from the north and went on to Enshemesh. It continued towards Geliloth, facing the climb up to Adummim, and then went down to the stone of Bohan, Reuben's son.
And passed along toward the side over against Arabah northward, and went down unto Arabah:
The border passed along the slope facing the Arabah to the north, and went down into the Arabah.
And the border passed along to the side of Bethhoglah northward: and the outgoings of the border were at the north bay of the salt sea at the south end of Jordan: this was the south coast.
The boundary line passed along the northern side of Bethhoglah. It ended at the northern bay of the Salt Sea, at the southern end of the Jordan. This was the southern border.
And Jordan was the border of it on the east side. This was the inheritance of the children of Benjamin, by the coasts thereof round about, according to their families.
The Jordan River marked the eastern boundary. These were the borders all around the land inherited by Benjamin's descendants, clan by clan.
Now the cities of the tribe of the children of Benjamin according to their families were Jericho, and Bethhoglah, and the valley of Keziz,
In the heartland of Benjamin's tribe, nestled among their clans, lay the cities of Jericho, Bethhoglah, and the serene valley of Keziz.
And Betharabah, and Zemaraim, and Bethel,
Betharabah, Zemaraim, and Bethel,
And Avim, and Pharah, and Ophrah,
Avim, Pharah, and Ophrah,
And Chepharhaammonai, and Ophni, and Gaba; twelve cities with their villages:
Chepharhaammonai, Ophni, and Gaba: twelve cities in all, along with their villages.
Gibeon, and Ramah, and Beeroth,
Gibeon, Ramah, and Beeroth,
And Mizpeh, and Chephirah, and Mozah,
Mizpeh, Chephirah, and Mozah,
And Rekem, and Irpeel, and Taralah,
Rekem, Irpeel, and Taralah,
And Zelah, Eleph, and Jebusi, which is Jerusalem, Gibeath, and Kirjath; fourteen cities with their villages. This is the inheritance of the children of Benjamin according to their families.
Zelah, Eleph, Jebusi - now known as Jerusalem, Gibeath, and Kirjath; these fourteen cities, along with their surrounding villages, were the cherished inheritance passed down to Benjamin's descendants, each family receiving their share with joy and gratitude.
