Joshua 23, verse by verse
Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.
And it came to pass a long time after that the LORD had given rest unto Israel from all their enemies round about, that Joshua waxed old and stricken in age.
After a long period of peace that the LORD had blessed Israel with, protecting them from all their surrounding enemies, Joshua had grown old and weary with age.
And Joshua called for all Israel, and for their elders, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers, and said unto them, I am old and stricken in age:
Joshua gathered everyone in Israel - the elders, leaders, judges, and officers. He told them, "I am now old, my years are advanced."
And ye have seen all that the LORD your God hath done unto all these nations because of you; for the LORD your God is he that hath fought for you.
You've witnessed everything God has done to all these nations for your sake. It's God who has been your champion, fighting your battles.
Behold, I have divided unto you by lot these nations that remain, to be an inheritance for your tribes, from Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, even unto the great sea westward.
Look, I've divided the remaining nations among you by lot, as a legacy for your tribes, starting from the Jordan, along with all the nations I've already destroyed, stretching all the way to the vast western sea.
And the LORD your God, he shall expel them from before you, and drive them from out of your sight; and ye shall possess their land, as the LORD your God hath promised unto you.
Your God, full of power and love, will chase away those who oppose you, making them vanish from your sight. You will inherit their lands, just as God promised you.
Be ye therefore very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, that ye turn not aside therefrom to the right hand or to the left;
Stay strong and brave, follow all the teachings in Moses' law book. Don't stray from it, not even a bit to the right or left.
That ye come not among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow yourselves unto them:
Avoid mingling with these remaining nations around you. Don't even speak the names of their gods, let alone swear by them or serve them. Never bow down to them.
But cleave unto the LORD your God, as ye have done unto this day.
Stay passionately connected to the Lord your God, just as you've been doing until now.
For the LORD hath driven out from before you great nations and strong: but as for you, no man hath been able to stand before you unto this day.
The Lord has driven out great and powerful nations before you. Until now, no one has been able to resist you.
One man of you shall chase a thousand: for the LORD your God, he it is that fighteth for you, as he hath promised you.
With God on your side, you'll have the strength of a thousand men. He fights your battles, just as He promised.
Take good heed therefore unto yourselves, that ye love the LORD your God.
Pay close attention to your actions, ensuring that your love for God is always at the forefront.
Else if ye do in any wise go back, and cleave unto the remnant of these nations, even these that remain among you, and shall make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you:
If you choose to return and bond with the remaining people of these nations, marrying and uniting with them, it will deeply affect you.
Know for a certainty that the LORD your God will no more drive out any of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.
Be sure, God won't remove these nations for you anymore. They'll become snares and traps for you, whips on your backs and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this blessed land God gave you.
And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof.
Today, I'm following the path we all must take. Deep down, you know that every promise God made to you has been fulfilled; not a single one has been broken.
Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the LORD your God promised you; so shall the LORD bring upon you all evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.
As all the blessings God promised you have come true, so will the Lord bring on you every disaster He warned of, until He has destroyed you from this beautiful land He gave you.
When ye have transgressed the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and have gone and served other gods, and bowed yourselves to them; then shall the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land which he hath given unto you.
When you break God's sacred agreement and go and worship other gods and bow down to them, you ignite His wrath, and you'll swiftly perish from the blessed land He gifted you.
