Romans 10, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.

My deepest wish and heartfelt prayer to God for Israel is for their salvation.

2

For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.

I can vouch for their passion for God, but it's not rooted in true understanding.

3

For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.

They, in their ignorance of God's true goodness, tried to create their own version of goodness. But they failed to embrace and surrender to the divine goodness of God.

4

For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

Through faith in Christ, we are freed from the constraints of the law, and righteousness is available to all who believe.

5

For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them.

Moses explains that if you live by the law's righteousness, you will truly live.

6

But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)

Faith-based righteousness says, "Don't say in your heart, 'Who will go up to heaven?' (that is, to bring Christ down)."

7

Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)

Who dares to venture into the abyss? (In other words, to resurrect Christ from the dead.)

8

But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;

What does it say? The message is close to you, on your lips and in your heart. This is the message of faith that we share.

9

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and truly believe that God brought him back to life, you will be saved.

10

For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

With the heart we believe and are made right with God, and with the mouth we declare our faith and are saved.

11

For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

The sacred text assures us, anyone who trusts in Him will never feel regret or embarrassment.

12

For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.

No matter if you're Jewish or Greek, we're all equal. The same generous Lord hears everyone who reaches out to him.

13

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Anyone who sincerely cries out to God will find salvation.

14

How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

How can people seek God if they don't believe in Him? How can they believe if they've never heard of Him? And how can they hear if no one shares His word?

15

And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

How can one share the message if they aren't sent? Just as it's said, those who spread the peaceful gospel and bring joyful news are truly admirable!

16

But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?

Not everyone has followed the teachings of the gospel. As Esaias questions, "God, who has truly accepted our message?"

17

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Faith blossoms when we truly listen, and to truly listen, we must immerse ourselves in God's words.

18

But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.

But I ask, haven't they listened? Indeed, their voices have echoed across the globe, their words reaching every corner of the world.

19

But I say, Did not Israel know? First Moses saith, I will provoke you to jealousy by them that are no people, and by a foolish nation I will anger you.

Isn't it clear? Even Moses warned Israel. He said, "I'll make you jealous and angry with a nation that's insignificant and unwise."

20

But Esaias is very bold, and saith, I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me.

Isaiah bravely declares, "Even those who weren't looking for me, found me; I revealed myself to those who never asked for me."

21

But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.

To Israel, God says, "All day, I've reached out to a people who resist and argue against me."
