Romans 2, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.

You can't escape blame, whoever you are, if you judge others. Because when you point fingers, you're really pointing at yourself; you're guilty of the same things you accuse others of.

2

But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things.

We are confident that God's judgment is fair and truthful towards those who do wrong.

3

And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?

Do you really think, my friend, that while you judge others for their actions, yet do the same, you'll avoid God's judgment?

4

Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?

Don't underestimate God's wealth of kindness, patience, and tolerance. Don't you realize that His kindness is meant to guide you towards change?

5

But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;

But when you harden your heart and refuse to repent, you're storing up God's wrath against yourself for the day of wrath, when God's fair judgment will be revealed.

6

Who will render to every man according to his deeds:

Everyone will receive what they deserve based on their actions.

7

To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:

Those who persistently do good, seeking glory, honor, and everlasting life with patience, will be rewarded with eternal life.

8

But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,

For those who thrive on conflict, who ignore the truth and follow the path of wrongdoing, they will only find anger and punishment.

9

Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;

Suffering and distress will touch every person who does wrong, starting with the Jew, but also the non-Jew.

10

But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:

Blessings, respect, and tranquility to all who do good deeds, first to the Jew, but also to everyone else.

11

For there is no respect of persons with God.

God treats everyone equally, without favoritism.

12

For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;

Those who do wrong without knowing the law will perish without the law; those who sin knowing the law will be judged by it.

13

(For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.

God doesn't judge us by merely listening to His laws, but by how we act on them. Only those who live by His laws will be truly righteous.

14

For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:

Even those who don't know God's law, if they naturally follow its principles, they become their own guide, their own law.

15

Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)

They show that what the law requires is written on their hearts, their conscience acting as a witness, and their thoughts either accusing or defending them.

16

In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.

On the day when God, through Jesus Christ, will reveal and judge everyone's hidden truths, as per my teachings.

17

Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God,

Look, you identify as a Jew, find comfort in the law, and proudly proclaim your faith in God.

18

And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law;

You understand His desires and recognize the superior things in life, guided by His teachings.

19

And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness,

You're certain that you can lead the lost, be a beacon for those in the dark.

20

An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law.

A guide for the naive, a mentor to the young, possessing the essence of wisdom and truth in the law.

21

Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal?

So, you who guide others, don't you guide yourself? You who say stealing is wrong, do you steal?

22

Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege?

You who preach against adultery, do you commit adultery? You who despise false gods, do you rob their temples?

23

Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God?

You brag about knowing the rules, but do you realize that by breaking them, you're disrespecting God?

24

For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.

Because of your actions, people who don't know God are speaking ill of Him, just as it was foretold.

25

For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision.

Circumcision indeed has value if you follow the law. But if you break the law, your circumcision becomes meaningless.

26

Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision?

If someone who isn't circumcised still follows God's laws, won't their actions be as good as being circumcised?

27

And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfil the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the law?

Isn't it true that those who are naturally uncircumcised yet follow the law have the right to judge you, who despite being circumcised and having the law, still break it?

28

For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:

A true Jew isn't one only on the outside, and true circumcision isn't just an outward mark on the body.

29

But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

A true Jew is one inwardly, and true circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not just a written rule. Such a person's worth is not measured by human praise, but by God's approval.
