Proverbs 10, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

Solomon's wisdom says, a smart son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son brings sorrow to his mother.

2

Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death.

Ill-gotten gains bring no real benefit, but living righteously can save your life.

3

The LORD will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish: but he casteth away the substance of the wicked.

God won't let the good-hearted starve, but He will strip away the wealth of the wicked.

4

He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.

Those who are lazy become poor, but hard work leads to wealth.

5

He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.

A smart child works hard during the fruitful times, but a child who lazes around when it's time to reap the rewards brings disappointment.

6

Blessings are upon the head of the just: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.

Good fortune graces the righteous, while the wicked are shrouded in hostility.

7

The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot.

People will fondly remember the good, but the wicked will be forgotten.

8

The wise in heart will receive commandments: but a prating fool shall fall.

Those with wisdom in their hearts will embrace guidance, but a senseless chatterbox will stumble.

9

He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known.

Those who live with integrity walk with confidence, but those who choose deceit will be exposed.

10

He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow: but a prating fool shall fall.

One who deceives with a sly glance brings pain, but a chatty fool will stumble.

11

The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.

A good person's words are a fountain of life, but the words of the wicked hide violence.

12

Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.

Hatred only fuels conflict, but love has the power to forgive any mistake.

13

In the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom is found: but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.

Wisdom shines through the words of the wise, but the rod is for the back of anyone who lacks sense.

14

Wise men lay up knowledge: but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.

Smart people store wisdom, but foolish talk leads to disaster.

15

The rich man’s wealth is his strong city: the destruction of the poor is their poverty.

A wealthy man finds strength in his riches, while poverty is the downfall of the poor.

16

The labour of the righteous tendeth to life: the fruit of the wicked to sin.

The hard work of the good leads to a fulfilling life, while the outcomes of the evil breed more wrongdoing.

17

He is in the way of life that keepeth instruction: but he that refuseth reproof erreth.

Those who follow guidance are on the path to life, but those who ignore correction lose their way.

18

He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool.

Anyone who hides their hate through lies, or spreads false rumors, is simply foolish.

19

In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.

When many words are spoken, sin is never lacking; but those who hold their tongues show wisdom.

20

The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth.

The words of the righteous are precious like silver, while the heart of the wicked holds little value.

21

The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom.

The words of the good nurture many, yet those lacking wisdom perish.

22

The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.

God's blessings bring true wealth, and with it comes no pain or regret.

23

It is as sport to a fool to do mischief: but a man of understanding hath wisdom.

A fool finds joy in causing trouble, but a wise man takes pleasure in understanding.

24

The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him: but the desire of the righteous shall be granted.

What the wicked dread is exactly what will come upon them, while the righteous will see their hopes fulfilled.

25

As the whirlwind passeth, so is the wicked no more: but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.

Just as a storm quickly passes, so does the wicked disappear. But the good, they stand firm forever.

26

As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him.

Just as vinegar sours the mouth and smoke stings the eyes, so too is the frustration of dealing with a lazy person who fails to complete their tasks.

27

The fear of the LORD prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.

Respecting God lengthens your life, but the years of the wicked will be cut short.

28

The hope of the righteous shall be gladness: but the expectation of the wicked shall perish.

Those who are good will find joy in their hope, but the wicked will see their dreams crumble.

29

The way of the LORD is strength to the upright: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.

God's path empowers the righteous, but those who do wrong will face ruin.

30

The righteous shall never be removed: but the wicked shall not inhabit the earth.

Good people will always have a place, but those with evil hearts won't find a home here.

31

The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out.

The words of the righteous are filled with wisdom, but a deceitful tongue will be cut out.

32

The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked speaketh frowardness.

Good people speak with wisdom and kindness, but the wicked spew out harmful words.
