Proverbs 11, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.

God deeply despises dishonesty, but fairness and justice bring him great joy.

2

When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.

When arrogance arrives, it brings embarrassment. But humility carries wisdom.

3

The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them.

The honest will be led by their truthfulness, but the deceitful will crumble under their own lies.

4

Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death.

Wealth won't save you on the day of wrath; only living rightly can rescue you from death.

5

The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.

The virtuous will be guided by their goodness, but the wicked will stumble over their own wrongdoings.

6

The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them: but transgressors shall be taken in their own naughtiness.

The good-hearted will find salvation through their virtue, but wrongdoers will be trapped by their own wicked desires.

7

When a wicked man dieth, his expectation shall perish: and the hope of unjust men perisheth.

When an evil person dies, their dreams die with them; the aspirations of the unfair fade away.

8

The righteous is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked cometh in his stead.

The good escape hardships, while the wicked inherit their troubles.

9

An hypocrite with his mouth destroyeth his neighbour: but through knowledge shall the just be delivered.

A deceitful person harms others with their words, but the righteous are saved by their wisdom.

10

When it goeth well with the righteous, the city rejoiceth: and when the wicked perish, there is shouting.

When good people prosper, the city celebrates; when the wicked fall, there's jubilation.

11

By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted: but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.

The city thrives when blessed by the righteous, but the wicked's words can bring it to ruin.

12

He that is void of wisdom despiseth his neighbour: but a man of understanding holdeth his peace.

A person lacking wisdom often dislikes their neighbor, but a wise person remains silent and understanding.

13

A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.

A gossip spills secrets, but a trustworthy person keeps them hidden.

14

Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.

Without guidance, people stumble; but with many advisors, there is security.

15

He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for it: and he that hateth suretiship is sure.

If you vouch for a stranger, you may end up regretting it; but if you avoid such commitments, you'll be safe.

16

A gracious woman retaineth honour: and strong men retain riches.

A kind-hearted woman holds respect, while powerful men keep wealth.

17

The merciful man doeth good to his own soul: but he that is cruel troubleth his own flesh.

A kind person brings joy to their own heart, but a cruel one only hurts themselves.

18

The wicked worketh a deceitful work: but to him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward.

Those who choose evil are only fooling themselves, but those who do good will surely be rewarded.

19

As righteousness tendeth to life: so he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death.

Living a good and just life leads to life, while chasing evil leads to one's own death.

20

They that are of a froward heart are abomination to the LORD: but such as are upright in their way are his delight.

God despises those with wicked hearts, but He takes great joy in those who walk the path of righteousness.

21

Though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished: but the seed of the righteous shall be delivered.

Even if the wicked unite, they won't escape justice; but the descendants of the good will always find salvation.

22

As a jewel of gold in a swine’s snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion.

Just as a precious gold ring looks out of place on a pig's snout, so does a beautiful woman who lacks good judgment.

23

The desire of the righteous is only good: but the expectation of the wicked is wrath.

The pure-hearted yearn for goodness, while the wicked anticipate anger.

24

There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.

Some generously give away their wealth and yet grow richer; others hold back what they should give, and only suffer want.

25

The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.

A generous heart will be enriched, and those who help others will themselves be helped.

26

He that withholdeth corn, the people shall curse him: but blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it.

If you hoard grain, people will curse you. But if you sell it, blessing will rest on your head.

27

He that diligently seeketh good procureth favour: but he that seeketh mischief, it shall come unto him.

Those who passionately pursue goodness will find favor, but those who chase trouble will surely find it.

28

He that trusteth in his riches shall fall; but the righteous shall flourish as a branch.

Those who rely solely on their wealth will stumble, but the good-hearted will thrive like a blooming branch.

29

He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind: and the fool shall be servant to the wise of heart.

Anyone who brings chaos to their own home will gain nothing but emptiness, and the foolish will always serve the wise.

30

The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.

The good deeds of virtuous people bring life and joy, like a flourishing tree. And those who guide others towards righteousness are truly wise.

31

Behold, the righteous shall be recompensed in the earth: much more the wicked and the sinner.

Indeed, those who do good will be rewarded on earth, and even more so, the wicked and sinful will face their consequences.
