Proverbs 13, verse by verse

Each verse is given twice: first in the King James Version, then in the World Bible Guide plain reading.

1

A wise son heareth his father’s instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke.

A smart child listens to his father's advice, but a mocker ignores criticism.

2

A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: but the soul of the transgressors shall eat violence.

A person who speaks kindly will enjoy life's blessings, but those who betray will have their fill of violence.

3

He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.

If you hold your tongue, you protect your life. But if you speak without thinking, you're headed for ruin.

4

The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.

The lazy soul yearns but remains empty, while the hardworking soul is rewarded with abundance.

5

A righteous man hateth lying: but a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame.

A good person despises dishonesty, while a bad person brings disgust and ends up in disgrace.

6

Righteousness keepeth him that is upright in the way: but wickedness overthroweth the sinner.

Living a good and honest life protects you, but those who choose to do wrong will be undone by their own actions.

7

There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches.

Some people pretend to be wealthy, but they are truly empty. Others may seem poor, but they are incredibly rich in what matters.

8

The ransom of a man’s life are his riches: but the poor heareth not rebuke.

A man's wealth can buy back his life, but a poor man never hears such a threat.

9

The light of the righteous rejoiceth: but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

The righteous glow with joy, but the wicked's light will be extinguished.

10

Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.

Arrogance only leads to conflict, but wisdom accompanies those who seek good counsel.

11

Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase.

Money earned through deceit will soon disappear, but hard-earned wealth will only grow.

12

Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.

When hope is delayed, it breaks the heart; but when dreams come true, it's like life blossoming from a tree.

13

Whoso despiseth the word shall be destroyed: but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.

Those who ignore wisdom will face ruin, but those who respect guidance will find blessings.

14

The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.

The wisdom's rules are a life-giving spring, guiding us away from death's deadly traps.

15

Good understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors is hard.

Having wisdom wins you favor, but those who choose to do wrong will find their path tough.

16

Every prudent man dealeth with knowledge: but a fool layeth open his folly.

A wise person uses knowledge wisely, but a fool openly displays his foolishness.

17

A wicked messenger falleth into mischief: but a faithful ambassador is health.

A deceitful messenger stumbles into trouble, but a loyal envoy brings peace and wellbeing.

18

Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction: but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured.

Those who refuse instruction will end in poverty and shame, but those who accept correction will be respected.

19

The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul: but it is abomination to fools to depart from evil.

Achieving your dreams brings joy to your heart, but those who love wrongdoing find it repulsive to turn away from their wicked ways.

20

He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

If you journey with the wise, you'll become wise; but if you hang out with fools, you'll find ruin.

21

Evil pursueth sinners: but to the righteous good shall be repayed.

Disaster chases those who do wrong, but those who do good will be rewarded with blessings.

22

A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.

A kind person leaves wealth for their grandchildren, while a wrongdoer's riches ultimately benefit the righteous.

23

Much food is in the tillage of the poor: but there is that is destroyed for want of judgment.

The poor may grow plenty of food on their land, but injustice can sweep it all away.

24

He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

If you hold back the rod, you hate your child. But if you truly love them, you'll be quick to discipline them.

25

The righteous eateth to the satisfying of his soul: but the belly of the wicked shall want.

Good people nourish their souls with what they consume, but the wicked will always feel unsatisfied.
